yeah it is ....its a editable default photoshop file.

Ive always known pictures that have been pre cut out as renders....but also heard them referred to as PSD's

PSDs are definitely just PhotoShop Documents - they are not special images that do not have backgrounds. Many other programs can produce/save images with the backgrounds 'knocked out', like Fireworks (PNG files) or Paintshop Pro (PSP files) for example.
But if you want to be able to work with an image that has had the background erased or knocked out, then you will usually need the program that the image was created in (unless you have a program that is able to read other program formats - like Painshop Pro that can open and save Photoshop files with all layers in tact).

Hope this helps anyone still wondering... ;)
