Reports say actor Heath Ledger was sick with pneumonia when he died from a suspected drug overdose at an apartment in New York.

Ledger's family has also been told by police that the actor's death was not suicide, entertainment website TMZ reports.




The website claims a representative from Ledger's family contacted them to deny reports that the actor had killed himself.

The 28-year-old actor's body was found at a residence in Broome St, SoHo, by a housekeeper and a masseuse at 3.31pm local time (7.31am AEDT).

A New York Medical Examiner has attended the apartment where Ledger was found. His body was removed from the building on a stretcher in a black body bag.

The housekeeper and masseuse reportedly found Ledger naked and unconscious on a bed, with prescription and non-prescription pills strewn on a night table next to him.

Bottles of the anti-anxiety drugs Diazempam and Alprazolam were reportedly found at the apartment.

Paramedics who attended the scene found the actor in full cardiac arrest, and unsuccessfully attempted to perform CPR. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they did not suspect foul play, but could not say whether the death was accidental or deliberate.

The news is just so sad. He will be missed by family, friends and fans.  A great loss to Australia and the world's film industry.

RIP Heath, it was most probably accidental.  Feel sorry for his daughter Matilda.

sad because he was a decent actor and apprently a good bloke.

but i have no sympathy for anyone doing drugs. IF that is how he died then its a real shame because he did seem like a decent guy, not a dumb junkie.

I wouldn't call myself a huge fan of Heath, but the few movies I did watch him in, I enjoyed.

A sad loss for his daughter, family, friends and fans.

I'm probably not going to see that movie, it was in part because of that role he was taking sleeping pills.

nope more like can't sleep, must play a convincing murderous clown during filming he found he couldn't shut his mind down his body was exhausted but his mind was working overtime.  One of the drugs he was taking stilnox(that cocktail of drugs can actually be dangerous anyway) has dangerous side effects it can make those taking it drive cars in their sleep.

Clowns are creepy, hence my dislike of Ronald McDonald. 

Back to Heath, I hope it was all accidental.  Did anyone hear that looney American Extreme Christian on the radio who said he deserved to die as he played the role of a gay cowboy?  Is she for real!!!!  :x

yeah she is, the same church group picket the funerals of soldiers who died in Iraq.  Andy it was accidental those closest to Heath have said he wouldn't do that plus he loved life.
