In the wake of a surfer being killed this week, I see where the South Aus government has decided to kill off sharks which come too close to shore.

"The government's position is quite clear," Mr Foley said. "Any large shark in close proximity to the beaches of our state – particularly the city of Adelaide – should be destroyed.

How bloody ridiculous.

Nature is a dangerous place, and surfing is a dangerous sport. We go there knowing the chances. As it is, someone gets chomped for maybe every 50 million hours Aussies spend in the sea - hardly a high risk situation. If you get hurt it's most likely you'll get dumped hard or hit by your own board. Many more surfers die driving to the beach.....

It is in the nature of sharks to eat, it's in the nature of waves to dump you and if you get too much water in your lungs you'll drown. The surf is nature at it's finest - wild, unpredictable and absolutely beautiful.

We know the dangers, and you'll notice it's not the surfers and their families screaming "kill the sharks".

Surfing can be dangerous! If you don't like it, don't go!
