Rebels show true colours
March 29, 2007 12:00am
A BLUE and white rebellion is ready to infiltrate Melbourne's sporting landscape.
The Melbourne Rebels will be the Victorian Rugby Union entry in the inaugural Australian Rugby Championships, which kick off in August.
The Herald Sun can exclusively reveal the Rebels jersey -- a blue and white hoop design, modelled by former Wallabies prop Fletcher Dyson.
VRU officials decided on the Rebels name in honour of the state's first home-grown Wallaby, decorated war hero Sir Edward "Weary" Dunlop, with chief executive Ron Steiner lauding him as a much-loved one.
Steiner will officially reveal the club's colours and moniker at a gala lunch at Crown today.
He said the Rebels name was selected after a lengthy process that included major input from the local rugby union community.
"We are taking on the establishment in giving Victoria a deserved place at the national rugby table," Steiner said last night.
Former Wallabies giant Matt Cockbain will attend the launch with a view to continue talks with VRU officials.
While signing former Wallaby Cockbain would be a coup for the Rebels' development, the club has approached the Australian Rugby Union for greater assistance in recruiting quality players from the four Australian Super 14 teams.
Under the ARU's quota system for the competition, Melbourne is allowed to sign three players from ACT Brumbies and Western Force, and one each from New South Wales Waratahs and Queensland Reds.
Former Australian Rugby Sevens coach Bill Millard has been scouring the country since his appointment as Rebels coach in the search of the best young talent.
There are eight teams involved in the new competition that is aimed at bridging the widening divide between club rugby and Super 14.
New South Wales has three teams, Central Coast Rays, Sydney Fleet and Western Sydney Rams, Queensland two -- Ballymore Tornadoes and East Coast Aces -- with Canberra Vikings, Perth Spirit and Melbourne rounding out the competition.
The Rebels will base themselves at Olympic Park before shifting to Melbourne's new rectangular stadium in 2009.

Soooo..
Do we make a big fuss and go to their games too en masse, to help create the impression there'll be demand for the rectangular stadium and help make it less likely the government will drop the project, or do we instead give rugby union the (silent) treatment, which it deserves?

Hey I like both rugby codes
I think its great to have both here better than the game with the round ball & the one with shitty handling in it IMO.
