Breaking news: Premier League new boys Sheffield Utd have hung on 1-1 @ home against Liverpool in the first match of season 2006/2007.

United opened the scoring just after half time through Rob Hulse, but Liverpool won a dubious penalty 25 min later, converted by Robbie Fowler.

Bad news for Liverpool though, with Riise & Carragher both suffering ankle injuries early on & having to leave the field.

Been some interesting results so far but still a long way to go. It does however look like it will be one of the best and closest seasons for a while.

Will be interesting to see how teams handle the constant switching of the midfield that United showed last night. Fulham really had no answer for it and very surprised there wasn't a Red card for the tackle on Giggs.

Good win to start the season......

United cruises to a comfortable 5-1 win over Fulham, who couldn't even score a goal for themselves (well, not at the right end anyway...) in front of a HUGE crowd of 75000+.

Haven't seen the stomping incident yet, but how the hell someone only gets a yellow for stomping on another player is a complete mystery to me...surely it should've been an instant red?

And Chelsea sees off 10-man Manchester City 3-0.  The EPL season gets off to a flying start. No doubt it's going to be a fierce battle at the top...& probably at the bottom too. :D

Good to see Pompey up the top of the ladder ATM, after narrowly avoiding relegation last season. Here's hoping they can be up there with the big guns come season's end.

7 games down and still unbeaten ... not even the big guns can say that!

Do I dare to dream about a point or better at Stamford Bridge?
Hey if Boro can beat them, anyone can! ;)

EPL WRAP: Aussies shine
Sportal

It was a good day for Australian forwards in the north of England, with both Mark Viduka and Tim Cahill scoring as Middlesbrough hung on to defeat Everton, while Manchester United maintained top spot on the Premiership table and Chelsea was rocked by a serious injury to Carlo Cudicini.

At the Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough produced a firm rearguard effort to deny fast-finishing Everton in a confidence boosting 2-1 victory.

Aiyegbeni Yakubu opened the scoring for Boro, firing a 27th minute penalty past Tim Howard before the Nigerian striker saw a second spot kick saved after the break.

Viduka eventually doubled Boro's lead in the 71st minute, yet Cahill soon equalised with a fine individual effort nutmegging German World Cup defender Robert Huth before slamming the ball past compatriot Mark Schwarzer.

The win was Boro's second this season, seeing the club climb to 13th on the Premiership table, while Everton slips to seventh, with both Schwarzer and Cahill deserving credit having only returned to England yesterday after playing in Australia's Asian Cup qualifying win over Bahrain.

Manchester United scored three second-half goals in a come from behind 3-1 win over Wigan at JJB Stadium.

United was on the back foot five minutes in when Leighton Baines produced a stunning 30-metre shot to put Wigan ahead, but goals to Nemanja Vidic, Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer after the break saw United maintain top-spot on the Premiership table above Chelsea, while the Latics slip to 17th.

Chelsea (second) goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini has been seriously injured in an ill-tempered 1-0 win over Reading (eighth) at the Madejski Stadium.

Cudicini came on after regular Chelsea stopper Petr Cech was also stretchered off in the fourth minute, yet the Italian was taken from the ground late in the match in a neck brace after having been given oxygen on the pitch.

Amidst all the drama, there was some football played as well with Frank Lampard's free kick pin-balling through the Reading defence before going in off the unlucky Ivar Ingimarsson, while Chelsea's Mikel Jon Obi and Royal substitute Andre Bikey were dismissed for two yellow cards.

Portsmouth (third) returned to winning ways through a 2-0 victory over West Ham (18th) as the Hammers' season continues to go from bad to worse.

Nwankwo Kanu opened the scoring for Portsmouth in the 24th minute when he headed in Glen Johnson's cross, while second-half substitute Andy Cole fired in the second with eight minutes remaining.

Arsenal (fourth) wrapped up a professional 3-0 win over Watford (19th) at Emirates Stadium, yet was thankful for some poor Hornets' finishing in the early stages as it won its fourth consecutive match.

The Gunners started brightly, with Theo Walcott posing some severe problems for Watford's defence before Damien Francis missed two superb opportunities to put the visitors ahead.

Arsenal went on to open the scoring in the 33rd minute as Jordan Stewart unluckily put the ball in his own net, before goals to Thierry Henry and Emmanuel Adebayor saw the hosts run out comfortable victors

Juan Pablo Angel took centre stage for all the wrong reasons as Aston Villa (fifth) drew 1-1 with 10-man Tottenham (14th) at Villa Park.

Spurs dominated most of the match without scoring, yet, in the final 20 minutes Angel managed to send a spot kick wide after Calum Davenport saw red for fouling Gabriel Agbonlahor in the area, before the Colombian sent Jermaine Jenas's cross into his own net.

Gareth Barry saved Angel's blushes though, firing home an imperious curling strike from 20 metres out, before Angel saw his final shot tipped over by Paul Robinson as Tottenham clung on.

Craig Bellamy scored against former club Blackburn (ninth) as Liverpool (10th) laboured to a 1-1 draw with Rovers at Anfield.

Jermaine Pennant looked dangerous for the Reds down the flank in the early stages, but Blackburn took a 17th minute lead when the impressive David Bentley sent in a quality cross for Benni McCarthy to side-foot home.

Liverpool continued to struggle yet drew a goal back 20 minutes after the break when Bellamy was left unmarked to nod in Fabio Aurelio's cross.

Manchester City (11th) and Sheffield United (16th) also cancelled each other out in a scrappy 0-0 draw at City of Manchester Stadium.

Bernardo Corradi missed two first-half chances for City before Rob Hulse saw his athletic overhead kick strike the bar down the other end just before the break.
