Happy Commonwealth Games!
Mugabe is butchering & terrorising 'whites'.
Sierra Leone's warring factions are just butchering & torturing each other.
Ah the niceties of 'politics'

"We are the puppets and fate the puppeteer
This is not a metaphor, but a truth sincere
On this stage, fate for sometime our moves steer
Into the chest of non-existence, one by one disappear.

I think a lot of the confusion & criticism stemmed from the fact that a large section of the TV audience,(even some living in Melbourne), just didn't get the connection with a lot of the things presented. I'm guessing there was some kind of programme/announcer for those at the stadium ?Having been to both the opening and closing - I thoroughly enjoyed it.
For me those helicopter shots panning around above the cycle road races said far more to the outside world about My city & why I love it

We would have had less comments than what would have been presented on telly. I knew the duck thing was a leunig thing (most likely the connection between The Age and CommGames). I have since learnt more about Leunig and his pathetic duck. Tigger knows more!
But the representations.
Also helps when you speak to some of the guys near Richmond Station that were dressing as connies (tram conductors), who were also a theme in opening and closing. The spectacle of the connie with wings flying above the centre stage could easily be a reference to their death in Melbourne history and a longing for what they brought to Melbourne to return.
Bring back the connies!
