Out of MLB, MLS, NBA, NFL, and NHL, only baseball and soccer start and end their seasons in the same year. The other three start in October with NFL finishing by February and NBA & NHL having finals series in May/June.

It's mainly to do with the summer break between June-August and the heat issue that would've plagued the more physically intense sports. If we were in the northern hemisphere, our NRL season would probably be the same way. The English league didn't use to play in the summer until Super League came to town.

Back on the 49ers - this is the reason they are so crap: "Smith (QB) finished 9-of-23 for 74 yards, four interceptions, fumbled twice (lost only one), and was sacked five times." (against the Colts)

Cincinatti 20
Jacksonville 23.

:(

Still, a close game. The Jags got off to a flying start and we couldn't quite reel 'em in.
Tennessee next week.

No, the O-line is the reason the 49ers are so crap, not to mention their D.
Alex Smith defently has skills and is a classy player. I loved watching him in college. If he had the time someone like Tom Brady had, he would put up much better stats.

Speaking of Brady and the Pats.... My Broncos outplayed them easily today (although we again fell asleep at the end) im one very happy Bronco supporter sitting at 5 - 1 on top of the AFC WEST. 8)

I wasn't having a go at Smith's ability as a QB - if he was sacked 5 times, I think that clearly indicates the offensive line is crap or isn't doing their job! It could also explain why he threw 4 interceptions and had so many incompletions if he was being hurried so much - 5 sacks is only the amount of times he was caught, not how many times he was almost caught!

I don't agree with your comments regarding their D though - I think this is the only area that they are OK in, and the only reason why teams aren't racking up 50 or 60 points against them. But they can only do so much, and if the offense is so incompetent that the defense has to spend so much time on the field, they are obviously going to concede some yards and points through sheer exhaustion.

Normal service has (hopefully) been interupted again, with the Bengals knocking over the Titans. 8) That's 5and 1.

Carson Palmer again came through with a couple of late drives.

Steelers next week. Go Bengals.

Bugger!

Steelers 31  Bengals 17.

Ultimately, the Cats just couldn't do it without Palmer. Kitna really is only a second string QB (24/40 for 197). The Bengals D has been average all year and when without Palmer on the grass this season have really looked rather ordinary.

Still, a vast improvement over recent years and they are a pretty young team, so there's plenty of hope for bigger and better things in the next couple of seasons.
