Anzacs 64 Cumbria 12
BRETT KIMMORLEY booked a spot for Australia's Tri Nations rugby league Test with Great Britain with a man of the match performance today.

Kimmorley, who haunted Great Britain in last year's Ashes series, is now certain to win a Test recall in place of the injured Darren Lockyer (rib).

The Cronulla captain was the dominant player on the ground despite being rested with 10 minutes remaining in a lopsided encounter at Derwent Park in Workington.

His performance was the good news for Kangaroos coach Wayne Bennett.

The bad news was the absence of Ben Kennedy and Shaun Timmins from the Anzacs lineup, with both players spending the night in their hotel room fighting viral infections.

The Anzacs – made up of players from the touring New Zealand and Australian squads – took nine minutes to open their account.

But Matt Bowen's try signalled an onslaught as the Kangaroos raced to a 28-4 halftime lead.

Prop Mark O'Meley, who produced an eyecatching performance, charged over in the 12th minute – scoring the first of his three tries – before St George Illawarra centre Matt Cooper swooped on a loose ball and raced away seven minutes later to make the score 18-0.

Kiwi centre Shontayne Hape made it 22-0 in the 22nd before the home fans were given something to cheer about, winger Craig Calvert diving over in the corner.

Wests Tigers centre Dene Halatau restored normal order five minutes before the halftime break when he finished off a movement started by O'Meley and kept alive by Bowen.

O'Meley opened the second-half in style, running off Kimmorley to make the score 34-4.

Kimmorley then gave former Melbourne team-mate Scott Hill a saloon passage to the line as the Anzacs cracked the 40-point barrier.

That try stung the locals into action and they scored the game's next two tries, Calvert grabbing his second before second-rower Oliver Wilkes got in on the act.

But their joy was shortlived.

Australian winger Brent Tate swooped on a poor kick and raced 90m to make the score 46-12 before Kiwi winger Henry Fa'afili finished off a sweeping backline movement in the 68th minute to take the Anzacs past the 50-point mark.

Hape added his second with 10 minutes remaining.

O'Meley deservedly finished off the scoring, completing his hat-trick with three minutes remaining.

ANZACS 64 (M O'Meley 3 S Hape 2 M Bowen M Cooper D Halatau S Hill B Tate H Fa'afili tries B Kimmorley 9 M Bowen goals) CUMBRIA 12 (C Calvert 2 O Wilkes tries) at Derwent Park in Workington Town, England. Referee: G Black. Crowd: 4203.

I actually thought Australia would score more. I tipped 70 - 8.
