Could it get any worse for Manly and their supporters?
MANLY'S inspirational captain Ben Kennedy has been cruelly stripped of the Rugby League Professionals Association player-of-the-year award because he didn't pay his union fees.
In a day of embarrassment for the RLPA, The Daily Telegraph yesterday discovered the final six rounds of secret voting for players had been mistakenly posted on the association's website.
The points for the final rounds were quickly removed from the website following The Daily Telegraph's inquiries.
The website revealed Kennedy had finished on 35 points to be clear of Cronulla's Paul Gallen (33) and Parramatta's Nathan Hindmarsh (32).
But Kennedy, who retired after Manly's semi-final loss last Friday night, has been robbed of the award for failing to pay his $1600 fees. Amazingly, Gallen was also thrown out for not paying fees to leave third-placed Hindmarsh the bizarre winner of the award, to be presented at a gala evening on Friday week.
RLPA chief executive Matthew Rodwell did not deny that Hindmarsh had won the award, despite finishing third in polling.
Kennedy manager's Mick Newton was furious last night that the champion forward would be denied a final honour.
"It's laughable," said Newton.
Kennedy said: "I was under the impression I had paid my fees. There was an instance when the RLPA visited the Manly club but I was away on another duty.
"I've always been a big supporter of the RLPA and have always paid my fees."
Manly football manager Peter Peters was also bewildered.
"If Nathan Hindmarsh is the person I think he is, he wouldn't accept the award under those circumstances," Peters said.
Gallen told The Daily Telegraph: "I'm not in the association." When told he could have won the award, Gallen said: "Oh well. Do you know what I would have won?"
Rodwell would not reveal the new winner but Hindmarsh is the man.
"That can't be determined. We'll have to check the points," Rodwell claimed.
"It becomes a concern when you do these awards and whether they are to be won by members or not."
