Saturday 19th March 2005

engage Super League

St Helens 64 - 16 Wakefield Saints walked through a strangely sudued Wakefield outfit almost at will. It was a bit like basketball at times.Three tries in six minutes midway through the first half put St Helens in complete control against Wakefield. Their ebullient coach Ian Millward, a favourite of many on here I know, was cock a hoop at he end (enough said?)

Northern Rail Cup

London Skolars 16 - 41 Keighley The Rams bounced back from their Challenge Cup disappointment easily overcoming their London opposition.
Warrington Wizards 52 - 38 Bradford Dudley Hill A pleasing home win for the Wizzards beating an experienced Dudley Hill team.

Sunday 20th March 2005

engage Super League

Warrington 14 - 8 Huddersfield This was a very close fought match that Huddersfield came close to snatching. Both teams see each other as close rivals in the season ahead ... aspiring 'upper middle' in the ladder! Warrington indebted to Toa Kohe Love and Brent Grose for their tries and the victory.
London 66 - 8 Widnes The Broncos demolished the Vikings with a 12 try show at their Griffin Park ground. The two Widnes tries were scored by winger Aaron Moule.

Northern Rail Cup

Doncaster 54 - 0 Batley A tough Doncaster ran wild while sadly the Bulldogs could find no answer.
Dewsbury 40 - 8 Sheffield The Rams tamed the Eagles. Ex Fev Rovers captain Richard Chapman got a well deserved hat trick of ties...go Chappy go!
Workington 44 - 14 Gateshead On this strong showing Workington are hopig for good things from the forthcoming season proper.
York 16 - 24 Castleford Brave York put on a great show, leading the NL1 favourites, Cas, at half time. Cas just did enough in the second half to come away with a scraped win.
Bramley 26 - 12 Hemel Phoenix club Bramley beat the newcomer southern team Hemel Hempstead (in Hertfordshire) both teams putting in a decent performance.
Blackpool 16 - 35 Oldham Newly reformed Blackpool, a re-sited Chorley outfit, are showing promise but came up against a good Oldham side who came away with the spoils.
Rochdale 54 - 20 Swinton Rochdale too good for a struggling Swinton
Halifax 34 - 26 Hull K R Halifax were deserving winners of this great match. A much fancied Hull KR outfit just couldn't quite pull this off.
Featherstone 28 - 18 Hunslet All credit to Hunslet who came to the Lionheart Stadium determined to compete, and they did! They scored first with a penalty goal but after that played catch up to an enthusiastic Fev side full of promising youngsters. I woz there! Fev try scorers: Andy Jarrett, Craig Moss, Ian Tonks, Richard Newlove, Danny Maun and Bryn Powell.
Barrow 2 - 42 Whitehaven A sad day for Barrow outclassed at home by a very promising Whitehaven team.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!

The Easter weekend SL fixtures got off to a rip roaring, hootin' tootin' start with Leeds slaughtering Bradford on their own big wide Odsal pitch. I was surprised to see the final result after seeing the half time scores were reasonably close.
Final Score: Bradford 12-42 Leeds. Media phrases used over here: Leeds' second half blitz; Leeds run riot!
This puts Bradford and probably almost all the rest of the SL clubs' hopes for the SL crown in the 'dustbin of dreams'.
Which other team might have a chance on a good day? I hesitate to say this ... no... no ... groan ... Saints?
Well whatever, Leeds on this form look like being runaway winners of SLX. They've a good strong squad as well!

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!

Bradford 12 (6)
Tries: K Pryce, Reardon
Goals: Deacon (2)
Leeds 42 (12)
Tries: Walker, Ellis, Senior, Burrow (2), Sinfield, Calderwood
Goals: Sinfield (7)
Leeds Rhinos weathered an early storm at Odsal before running riot to crush the Bradford Bulls with a blitz of second-half tries.

LHF Healthplan National League Two
London Skolars 26 - 56 Sheffield - Skolars still struggling to find their feet at this level
Dewsbury 34 - 8 Hunslet Just the start the Rams wanted, here crushing Hunslet

Blackpool 12 - 26 Keighley - Blackpool still trying to find their feet.
Workington 36 - 30 Gateshead A gutsy preformance from Gateshead ... but Workington snatched it!

engage Super League
Huddersfield 26 - 12 Salford - Only just finished ... but a result as expected.
Leigh 24 - 22 London Leigh's determined second half fightback means they've claimed their first SLX win.
Hull 15 - 21 Wigan The now buzzing Warriors came from 14 - 0 down to beat Hull at the KC Stadium
St Helens 34 - 27 Bradford This was an epic at Knowlsley Road. Paul Wellens scored a hattrick of tries. Both coaches praised their players.

Thanks for that late result, PD
So sad to see Leeds Rhinos lose their first SLX match.
Semi has been scoring a fair number of tries and importantly for him got a regular place in this up and down Wildcats team. I always follow the fortunes of ex Fev star Jamie Rooney who's not just a good goalkicker but a great all round player.
The Wildcats' fans must be tearing their hair out at times when they can perform as they did in this match.
I though you might like the Robins result just a little bit TC

Here's a big laugh you might like:

There's no SL or National League 1 or 2 matches this weekend as it's Challenge Cup 4th Round fixtures. The matches are all on Saturday or Sunday as detailed below:
Sat 2nd April 2005

Powergen Challenge Cup Fourth Round
Leeds v Warrington 14:35
Toulouse v Wath Brow 17:00... sacre bleu the amateurs have an away match in France.
SM PIA v Keighley 17:00... aussi Keighley are away in France - at least three of their players couldn't find their passports a few days before the match and had to go to the Liverpool Passport Office to get new ones!

Sun 3rd April 2005

Powergen Challenge Cup Fourth Round
Union Trezieste Catalan v Hull K R 14:00... The Hull KR lads flew out on the same flight as the Keighley squad. All the Robins folk had their passports to hand!
Featherstone v Bradford 15:00 Good luck to Fev. Hope you keep your fingers crossed for us. We are going to need all the luck going against this top SL outfit packed with stars!
Rochdale v Salford 15:00
Batley v Leigh 15:00
Barrow v Sheffield 15:00
Doncaster v Workington 15:00
Wigan v Whitehaven 15:00

Results for Saturday 2nd April 2005

Powergen Challenge Cup Fourth Round

Toulouse 60 - 12 Wath Brow (Cumbria)The last amateur team in the comp had their dream shattered by a French team that was just too good for them.

SM PIA 53 - 26 Keighley Pia, another French side, are also into the last 16 of the competition after beating Keighley Cougars. Maxime Greseque starred for the home side, scoring 29 points with three tries, eight goals and one drop goal. I mention him as he played for Fev last season. Well played Max!

Leeds 26 - 22 Warrington Leeds were unconvincing today. They just scraped past a Warrington side who look as though they are starting to find their feet. Marcus Bai played well without starring.

The full set of Challenge Cup results then:

Saturday 2nd April 2005

Powergen Challenge Cup Fourth Round

Toulouse 60 - 12 Wath Brow
SM PIA 53 - 26 Keighley
Leeds 26 - 22 Warrington

Sunday 3rd April 2005

Powergen Challenge Cup Fourth Round
Wakefield 12 - 36 Hull Wakefield were not up for this one. They were outplayed and disappointed their fans.
Wigan 42 - 4 Whitehaven Wigan were clearly too good for this relatively strong National League Club.
Batley 8 - 25 Leigh Leigh may not be doing well in SL, but they were too good for Batley
Widnes 32 - 18 Swinton Despite the big gap in leagues between these two teams, Widnes will be pleased with this win especially as Swinton will give their opponents a few shocks this season.
Doncaster 54 - 18 Workington Doncaster are looking good for this season although here just well beating a struggling Workington outfit.
Barrow 33 - 26 Sheffield A close call for Sheffield. That's a pretty good performance from them to travel up to Cumbria and run an improved Barrow close.
Huddersfield 22 - 26 St Helens Victory for Saints yes, but controversy abounds. Huddersfield were upset by switch of referees by request of St Helens. Coach Jon Sharpe convinced they were disallowed two good tries and that the referee performed badly. He was fuming, and didn't hold back in his criticism when interevieweed on Radio Leeds!
Featherstone 14 - 80 Bradford A strong Featherstone performance made the Bulls have to struggle to scrape a victory over the NL1 outfit - if only! Fev were totally outplayed by a fitter, stronger outfit who took us apart in a very professional way. This is a record defeat for a proud club. Even so our fans' comments on the Fev Forum are very positive and folk are realistic about the gulf between the top of SL and the National League clubs.
Hunslet 4 - 70 London ... As above... London should have got more points against a poor Hunslet side.
Rochdale 24 - 30 Salford SL Salford did have to work hard to scrape a victory against National League opponents Rochdale.
Halifax 23 - 14 Castleford This is Castleford's first defeat of the season and it was against a team who will be rivals in the race for promotion at the end of the season. Cas fans were not pleased. Oh dearie me no!!!
Oldham 28 - 32 York A great away win for this NL2 side York who have rebuilt a bit after last season.
Union Trezieste Catalan 32 - 18 Hull K R The Robins not able to come back from France with a victory. This is the French club in the south of France near Perpignon who are being gifted a place in SL next season at the expense of a British club. You may not realise it but most of UTC's players are travelling Aussies! I ask you!!!

The weekend starts here:

Friday 8th April 2005

LHF Healthplan National League Two

Sheffield 6 - 14 Blackpool Now that is an upset. The Eagles will be very upset. Blackpool,as a newly re-established club, will be heartened.

engage Super League
St Helens 60 - 16 Leigh Saints totally thrash Leigh who are the whipping boys of SL so early in the season that it's a shame. The best that can be said is that they had so many changes to their squad from their promotion winning team that they might yet show improvement - but just don't hold your breath! Sean Long crossed the2000 career points mark. Saints go joint top of SL with Leeds who play their match against London on Saturday.
Salford 16 - 14 Wakefield - This was close all the way through. Luke Robinson scored two tries. Wakefield were playing catch up rugby but didn't quite make it. The City Reds will be happy to notch up another victory. They'll need every point they get with two to go down at season's end.
Huddersfield 24 - 16 Wigan Giants' Paul Reilly got a hat-trick in this impressive win over Wigan at the Galpharm Stadium. Brad Drew scored their other try with a length-of-the-field sprint.
Wigan had one try from Harrison Hansen and two by Jerome Guisset. Wigan just seemed to be out of sorts most of the game.

Sat 09 Apr 2005

engage Super League
Leeds 64 - 6 London Leeds bounce back to top form beating London in amazing fashion! Marcus Bai scored a hat-trick of tries in the final 17 minutes of the game.

Sun 10 Apr 2005

engage Super League
Hull 32 - 28 Widnes Widnes were leading early on, but couldn't quite hold out for a win. So respectable for the Vikings while Hull FC climb the table to third place. Moule was again on the score sheet scoring another try for Widnes.
Warrington 35 - 32 Bradford Another close result. Warrington held off a late rally to claim a hard-fought Super League victory over Bradford.

LHF Healthplan National League One
Castleford 36 - 22 Rochdale A respectable home win for Cas - back to winning ways.
Oldham 22 - 44 Doncaster This away win shows the Dragons are a team to watch this season.
Hull K R 44 - 30 Featherstone An expected home win for the Robins in this exremely high scoring matches. Both teams will want to tighten up their defences. Featherstone gave themselves too much to do after a dire first half left them with a deficit of 34 points. But my goodness, they gave it a go. And had they used the tactics in that first half they used in the second, they might well have taken the points. Whereas in the first they forlornly tried to muscle up to an enormous Robins pack and got blown away, in the second they decided to kick and turn the home defence; they kicked creatively into the wind, and chased everything well. Fev Australian Josh Weeden had another good game. Congratulations TC :D

Whitehaven 54 - 18 Halifax Look out all the other NL1 teams, this result shows Whitehaven will again probably be the team to beat to get promotion.
Batley 50 - 30 Barrow A ding dong battle. A thirteen try thriller - lucky for some!

LHF Healthplan National League Two
Hunslet 32 - 8 London Skolars As expected
Keighley 31 - 42 York York gaining a valuable away win.
Swinton 56 - 18 Workington Swinton show just how much of an improved team they are this season.
Gateshead 18 - 24 Dewsbury A close match from two teams desperate to find some form.

Fri 15 Apr 2005

engage Super League
Wigan 14 - 38 Leeds Leeds just too strong for the Wigan lads. it's not often visiting teams win at the JJB, but the Rhinos are in a purple patch. Marcus Bai got a terrific try. Liam Botham (Ian's son) got himself another try. Radlinski scored both of the Warriors' tries.

Sat 16 Apr 2005

engage Super League
London 20 - 30 St Helens A respectable performance by both teams. St Helens are the other team on top form. They are now just two points behind the Rhinos at thr top of SL.St Helens coach Ian Millward was denied the services of injured Great Britain duo Sean Long and Paul Sculthorpe, with Jamie Lyon in Australia attending the birth of his first child.

Sun 17 Apr 2005

engage Super League
Wakefield 28 - 40 WarringtonWire had a purple patch in the second half and blew Wakefield away. Some consolation points for them near the end made the score look a little more respectable. Wildcats missed Jamie Roonie.
Bradford 54 - 10 Huddersfield Cor blimey, guv, Bradford powered back to form smashing the Giants to bits. Lesley Vainikolo got a hat-trick of tries.
Widnes 6 - 22 Salford Widnes suffer again against a Salford team steadily picking up important points. Widnes in the drop zone with Leigh need to do something pretty soon. Luke Robinson again got two tries. Why did Wigan let him go?
Leigh 22 - 22 Hull Leigh sneaked a point and will be very pleased to do so against one of SL top teams. Surely Hull will consider this a point lost.

LHF Healthplan National League One
Doncaster 20 - 36 Hull K R An important and interesting result this. I know that Doncaster fancied themselves to be a top team this season so that tells the Robins how good they potentially are. This was a powerful win for them.
Oldham 20 - 32 Castleford Cas won again gathering another two points on their way back up (they hope).
Barrow 24 - 20 Rochdale Close! Rochdale will be kicking themselves!
Halifax 38 - 16 Batley Halifax back to winning ways against a poor Batley side.
Featherstone 20 - 40 Whitehaven Featherstone fell away at the end. Whitehaven are a big, powerful team who pressured Fev into mistakes. All the same it was closer than the score suggests. Fev need to find out how to win matches. They are struggling!

LHF Healthplan National League Two
Gateshead 0 - 50 Hunslet Poor Gateshead against a great Hunslet outfit
Blackpool 16 - 23 London Skolars London Skolars win a match!
York 60 - 10 Sheffield Sheffield are really strugglig at the moment. York are a decent team but that's not a scoreline that anybody wants.
Dewsbury 48 - 10 Swinton An amazing victory for a much improved Dewsbury against a decent Swinton outfit.
Workington 30 - 24 Keighley Keighley came close to a rare away victory. Workington will be pleased to have held on.

Huddersfield 22 - 36 St Helens - St Helens produced a strong second-half display to see off Huddersfield for the third time this season.

LHF Healthplan National League One
Hull K R 32 - 19 Oldham Another good win for the Robins - they are in the top three deservedly.
Barrow 22 - 36 Castleford Cas again won, this time away in Cumbria, It looks like only Workington and Hull KR will worry them ... possibly...
Rochdale 22 - 19 Halifax Halifax came close but they still haven't hit form
Whitehaven 20 - 6 Doncaster So Whitehaven confirmed themselves as serious promotion candidates and the Dragons didn't!
Batley 10 - 18 Featherstone Thank you thank you thank you!

LHF Healthplan National League Two
London Skolars 8 - 38 Swinton Swinton back to winning ways
York 74 - 12 Dewsbury This is an amazing result . OK York are good and this takes them to the top of NL2 but Dewsbury massively under performed.
Workington 44 - 24 Hunslet It's a long way to Cumbria - even further when you come back as losers,
