The NRL has announced extraordinary action against Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan and the financially imperilled club.
Sharks coach Shane Flanagan has been deregistered by the NRL.
NRL boss Todd Greenberg on Wednesday confirmed disciplinary action against Flanagan on Wednesday at 12pm (AEDT) following revelations the Cronulla mentor breached the terms of his 2014 season suspension, stemming from the club’s infamous supplements scandal.
Flanagan’s deregistration has been followed up by an extraordinary $800,000 fine issued to the Sharks.
The NRL has issued the Sharks a secondary $400,000 fine on top of the suspended $400,000 fine hanging over the club’s head since governance failings were first uncovered during the club’s supplements scandal.
An NRL integrity unit has discovered evidence that shows Flanagan was in contact with club officials during his suspension in 2014.
The evidence was uncovered during the integrity unit’s investigation into the Sharks’ 2015 salary cap breaches.
The salary cap investigation is expected to drag into 2019.
The Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield on Wednesday told Macquarie Sports Radio, Flanagan’s breach notice will allow him a chance to show cause why the NRL should not enforce an indefinite ban from the game.
The governing body declined to comment on the matter on Tuesday. Any ban would force the Sharks to hire a new head coach, with a number of candidates already being mentioned as possible appointments. Manly coach Trent Barrett is reportedly an option, as is Sharks current assistant John Morris and Sydney Roosters counterpart Adam O’Brien.
The NRL is also set to make a decision on the suspended $400,000 fine hanging over Cronulla from its governance failings around the club’s supplements scandal.
Having been forced to make a series of senior positions redundant after losing most of its top-tier jersey sponsorship deals heading into 2019, there are fears the $400,000 fine could bring the club to its knees.
“That would just about wind them up,” The Daily Telegraph’s Dean Ritchie told Sky Sports Radio on Wednesday.
