Jarryd Hayne released on bail to appear in court in December on sex assault charge

Jarryd Hayne was released on bail in the early hours of Tuesday morning after being charged with aggravated sexual assault and will face court next month.

The out-of-contract NRL star handed himself in to police on Monday afternoon after a sexual assault allegation was made by a woman who, according to reports, alleged she suffered injuries during an initially consensual sexual encounter with Hayne in the Hunter Valley on September 30.

After voluntarily attending Sydney’s Ryde police station he was arrested and subsequently charged by police. He was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on December 10, a police statement said, without naming Hayne.

“Police will allege in court that the man attended a home in the Hunter region on Sunday 30 September 2018, and sexually assaulted a 26-year-old woman,” the statement read.

The assault allegedly took place on the night of the NRL Grand Final. It was reported Hayne declined to be formally interviewed.

After questioning by detectives from the sex crimes squad, Hayne was charged with aggravated sexual assault — inflicting actual bodily harm.
The charge carries a maximum 20-year jail term if Hayne is convicted.
The NSW Criminal Code states for “circumstances of aggravation” means circumstances in which “the alleged offender intentionally or recklessly inflicts actual bodily harm on the alleged victim”.

It’s understood the alleged victim was interviewed by the NRL’s integrity unit before the matter was referred to police.

A spokeswoman for NSW Police told news.com.au: “Police are investigating following reports a woman was sexually assaulted by a 30-year-old man in late September.

“The investigation is being led by detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad.”

The claim likely comes as no help to Hayne’s pursuit of a new NRL contract, after his most recent deal with Parramatta expired on October 31. The Eels had been hopeful at least one other player could be picked up by another club to fit Hayne into next year’s salary cap.

“As this is a police matter the club will be making no public comment in relation to these reports,” a Parramatta spokeswoman said.

Hayne’s representative Wayne Beavis opted not to comment when contacted by AAP after the allegations arose.

A two-time Dally M Medallist, Hayne is one of the biggest names in the NRL thanks largely to his magical run to help Parramatta to the 2009 grand final. He has played 11 Tests for Australia and 23 State of Origins for NSW and scored 121 tries in 214 NRL games.

He also created headlines when he left the Eels to play in the NFL, running out for the San Francisco 49ers in late 2015.

However that one-year stay was plagued with drama, with Hayne still defending a civil court rape case made against him while living in the United States — an accusation he has long vehemently denied.

Geez, not looking good for Hayne... I assume his career is over and he may face at least some gaol time if he contests the charge and is convicted. Also doesn't do him much good with the civil case underway in America for sexual assault claim #1.

As much as I have always thought Hayne was an egotistical douche, it is still sad to see a RL player with such promise go out like this. Having said that, if he is found to have committed the offence, he deserves what he gets.

New allegations emerge in Jarryd Hayne sex assault case

Shocking allegations have emerged surrounding the night in which it is alleged Jarryd Hayne sexually assaulted a woman.

New allegations have emerged that Jarryd Hayne bit the woman he is charged with sexually assaulting in September.

A reticent Hayne said nothing to reporters as the out-of-contract NRL star reported to police to satisfy his strict bail conditions for the first time.

Hayne, 30, was charged with aggravated sexual assault and inflicting actual bodily harm after handing himself into Ryde police station on Monday afternoon.

He was released in the early hours of Tuesday morning after first reporting to the station about 4pm on Monday.

Police will allege the 26-year-old woman was bitten by Hayne, causing profuse bleeding that led to her going to hospital, The Daily Telegraph reports.

It is also alleged Hayne had advised a taxi driver to wait for him outside after he was taken to the woman’s house in the Hunter region.
Police will allege the pair connected via social media before Hayne attended the house and entered her bedroom where he took off her clothes.

Her mother is understood to have been home at the time and will be a key witness.

Hayne said nothing as he was swamped by reporters on his way in and out of Castle Hill police station about 7.30pm.

According The Daily Telegraph, the bail conditions state he must live in the Sydney suburb of Norwest and report to The Hills police station three times a week. He was forced to surrender his passport and is banned from any international airports.

The code-hopping star also handed over $20,000 surety, and agreed to stay away from the complainant and the Newcastle local government area.
He must not stalk, harass or threaten his alleged sexual assault victim.

The charge carries a maximum 20-year jail term if Hayne is convicted. The NSW Criminal Code states “circumstances of aggravation” means circumstances in which “the alleged offender intentionally or recklessly inflicts actual bodily harm on the alleged victim”.

It’s understood the alleged victim was interviewed by the NRL’s integrity unit before the matter was referred to police.

The former Parramatta and NSW origin star is currently out of contract and the ongoing case is expected to severely damage his prospects of securing a new NRL deal.

“As this is a police matter the club will be making no public comment in relation to these reports,” a Parramatta spokeswoman said.
NRL CEO Todd Greenberg refused to comment on Hayne’s playing future on Tuesday.

“Jarryd has got issues to deal with and they have got nothing to do with rugby league at the moment,” Mr Greenberg told reporters. “So I am not prepared to talk about that for obvious reasons.”

Jarryd Hayne in court today over sexual assault charges
news.com.au
10th December 2018

Rugby league star Jarryd Hayne is expected in court today after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in the Hunter region in November.

NRL player Jarryd Hayne is due to face court over the alleged sexual assault of a woman in NSW today.

Hayne, 30, was charged with aggravated sexual assault and inflicting actual bodily harm after he handed himself into Ryde police station in November.

A woman claims she suffered injuries during a sexual encounter with Hayne in the Hunter Valley and that she had photographs to back up her story.

It’s understood the alleged victim was interviewed by the NRL’s integrity unit before the matter was referred to police.

Police allege the assault of the 26-year-old woman took place in a Hunter Region home on September 30.

The one-time NFL player has been on strict bail including the condition he report to Ryde police station every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday between 8am and 8pm.

He’s also handed over his passport and a $20,000 surety, and agreed to stay away from the complainant and the Newcastle local government area.

Hayne is expected to appear at Burwood Local Court on Monday.

UPDATED:

With his manager Wayne Beavis behind him on the steps outside the court, Hayne stood and made no comment as a representative said, “as was said in court, Mr Hayne maintains his innocence and a plea of not guilty will be entered”.

“He’d like at this time to offer his thanks to those who have supported him including his parents.”

Earlier, Hayne arrived at court to a blaze of media cameras.

Wearing a grey suit, blue tie, white shirt and Rayban sunglasses, Hayne stepped from a car outside the front of Burwood Local Court and went through a security check before disappearing into a consultation room.

His solicitor Richard Pontello told the court his client would plead not guilty to the charge.

Hayne will not be required to appear in court when the matter returns on February 13.

Hayne sat in the front row of a crowded court with his manager Wayne Beavis.

He was surrounded by media before being bundled into a waiting car when he left court.

So in the end, Hayne was found guilty and sentenced to 5 years and 9 months gaol. A non-parole period of 3 years and 8 months. He has stated through his lawyer that he will be appealing the verdict.

Jack de Belin on the other hand, has had all sexual assault charges dropped completely, after two hung juries. Will likely be back in the Dragons team in the coming weeks, if not next week.
