A lot of turmoil around Samoa. The players haven't been happy with the governing body and coach for a while, with 34 current and former players penning a letter to the Samoan Prime Minister expressing their discontent.

Matty and Joey Johns, along with Sonny Bill-Williams have put their hand up to coach, which will obviously help attract top tier players to the Samoan National team. It's all a bit messy tbh.

Also poor form of news.com.au publishing the phone numbers of Sia Soliola and Tony Puletua in the letter. They have since edited the picture, but it was out there for a long time...

If this doesn’t go ahead this year because of the intransigence of V’landys, the N(SW)RL clubs (including Storm), and the RLPA, then I might just about be done with rugby league.

Let's call it like it is. Australia and NZ have withdrawn from the WC not just because of COVID fears over on "Plague Island", but because they fear it will impact the off-season (leading into next N(SW)RL season) too much if they have to quarantine for fourteen days upon return.

To all those who say "postpone it for 12 months", good luck getting any publicity for the tournament in Britain or elsewhere with the global juggernaut that is the FIFA World Cup being just around the corner (it being held in November-December '22 to get it away from the hottest part of the year in Qatar). Among various other issues like ground availability.

All true. However to be fair we need to remember that the covid risk in the UK is MUCH higher than Australia - with a population of roughly 2.5 times the population of Oz - had over 39,000 new cases reported YESTERDAY. And it's high summer there; the evidence to date indicates that (like flu) covid is much more prevalent in winter when the WC would have been played.
Coupled with the risk of the WC being ruined for a team if ONE player is diagnosed positive (just look at the mess SuperLeague is in) and the potential for quarantine periods to be as high as 28 days (if someone in the quarantine group comes down with covid in the 14 days the period is extended) I understand the decision.

May not like it, but see why it was made.
