I sorta get where you're coming from. Does this philosophy apply to all our players though? Or just Paps?
If it's to all our players then IMO pretty much all of them could get more cash elsewhere. So what do we do? Kids them all goodbye with well wishes and be left with no players?
Unless he says something stupid like Brandon did before he left then I am totally fine with him. In my eyes the club is kinda making the decision for him as he's not going to be paid like an elite fullback here and we've signed his backup to a 5 year contract extension.Lucas wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 12:58 pmI sorta get where you're coming from. Has a sniff of the Matt Orford's to me...

Pretty good result actually. A lot can happen in 12 months. We'd like to see more stability and flair from Paps, but it also gives us a while to look at Sua's development.
Gives us longer to decide how we want to structure the spine going forward knowing that Hughes and Munster won't be around forever. Implications there for Pezet, KRS and Wishart too.

If Paps re-signed for 2-3 years …would it have been likely that Sua tries to get to another Club ? More than likely based on what’s been reported. Does this mean Sua stays at Storm? Maybe just maybe Pap’s decision making is altruistic and has been to assist Storm to do exactly what’s happening…work out the best roster mix for the next 3-4 years
Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time

Shows you how little these so called journos know when they say stuff like "Storm will need a miracle to resign him"
Actual journalism is a very rare commodity these days. Actual reporters are few and far between - especially in sport. It's mostly rumour mongers and agenda-driven opinion pieces with a smattering of hate filled gutter crawlers.Storm_M_36 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 4:34 pm Shows you how little these so called journos know when they say stuff like "Storm will need a miracle to resign him"
We must all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately
Daily Telegraph:
Canterbury supremo Phil Gould has made a secret trip to Melbourne in a desperate last-ditch attempt to poach Ryan Papenhuyzen from the Storm, a move which is set to prove futile.
Canterbury football boss Phil Gould has failed to pull off a Ryan Papenhuyzen heist after making a secret trip to Melbourne to poach the Storm superstar.
This masthead can reveal Gould made a furtive southern sortie on Wednesday, but the Storm have staved off the Canterbury supremo’s last-ditch bid as the 2020 Clive Churchill Medallist prepares to ink a one-year extension.
The Bulldogs were regarded as front-runners to secure Papenhuyzen’s signature and this masthead understands ‘Gus’ Gould travelled to Melbourne as the battle for the fullback’s signature intensified.
While Canterbury have interest in Papenhuyzen, Gould has yet to formally table a deal, with the Bulldogs football chief instead wanting to gauge the flying fullback’s intentions before deciding whether to make an offer.
Gould’s trip to Melbourne is evidence of Canterbury’s determination to lure Papenhuyzen to Belmore, but the Storm empire has struck back in a bid to ensure the champion custodian stays loyal.
Papenhuyzen is off-contract at the end of next year and the 26-year-old has been heavily linked with the Bulldogs, who are chasing a match-winning outside back to add some strike to their attack.
The Bulldogs were hoping Gould’s visit to Melbourne could help seal the poaching deal, but the Storm remain quietly confident Papenhuyzen will commit to the club.
The Storm are open to a three-year extension Papenhuyzen, who is likely to ink a one-year deal for 2026, mindful Melbourne have outstanding young gun Sua Fa’alogo applying pressure in the battle for the No.1 jumper.
It is understood the Bulldogs had the funds to blow the Storm out of the water, with Canterbury having around $1.6 million free in the salary cap to help fund a Papenhuyzen heist.
But even the mastery of Gould’s famous motivational pitches appear to have been foiled by the Storm, who are expected to announce Papenhuyzen’s retention in the coming days.
Gould last week revealed he was on the hunt for players to beef-up Canterbury’s roster as part of his succession planning for 2026, admitting the Bulldogs had significant funds in the salary cap to potentially sign a marquee star such as Papenhuyzen.
“I am always thinking two or three years down the track,” Gould told the Footy Talk podcast last week.
Asked how much money the Bulldogs had in the salary cap, Gould said: “We were a long way under the salary cap, we were $700,000 under the cap (this year) and about another $900,000 we paid for players to leave, so that’s $1.6 million.
“The Bulldogs had lost their DNA and during this period we have been able to reconnect with our successful era.
“Corporately, our administration and Aaron Warburton (CEO) has done a great job, but they can’t do that unless we are winning games and showing promise on the field.
“It’s difficult to turn things around because this competition is extremely close and the competition for quality players and talent is quite fierce and costs a lot of money.
“This year was the start of what we were trying to do. It’s only the start. We are only getting started now and if you look at 2026, which is 15 months away, we’ve only got 20 players signed, and three or four guys are young fellas.”
Given the state of Canterbury’s roster, Papenhuyzen would have been a sensational addition, notwithstanding the injury dramas he has endured over the past few years that placed his NRL career in jeopardy at Melbourne.
But there is no questioning Papenhuyzen’s pedigree when fully fit. At 26, the supremely fit fullback could have feasibly played another eight years and helped the Bulldogs build another famous dynasty.
But the Storm rarely lose players they want to keep and have been able to thwart Gould’s multimillion-dollar poaching bid as Papenhuyzen shows faith in the Craig Bellamy masterplan at Melbourne.
“I want to win premierships,” Papenhuyzen told Triple M radio.
“I know my career has only got so long in it. You want to be in the best environment where you have got that growth mindset and you have a good roster.
“I am weighing up all those things at the moment. Melbourne definitely do have that, for sure. But we’ve just had a couple of people leave lately and I’m sort of waiting to see who we can get in those positions to fill in.
“So definitely more of a thinking decision, than money. It always plays its part. I have been able to sit down and speak to a few mentors who have said with big decisions you have to take your time with it, don’t rush into it.
“I’ve never actually been off-contract, so it’s quite a new feeling. I think a decision will come before the season. I don’t think it will drag it into the season.
“I know the effect it has on your teammates by dragging it out. I feel like I will come to a decision before games are played.”
This much of the same as Fox sports has, which is where they get most of their information and claim it as "staff writers"

Thought those Pap comments were poorly thought out on triple M. If he meant staff he articulated himself poorly, and we are keeping our squad together so at best guess he meant centres? Out of the 17 he's the one we need the biggest lift out of to push for premiership so i thought they were poor. If he was on the verge of an announcement though i guess can excuse him if his heads a bit muddled with it if this deal is getting done now.
If the contract rumours are true i reckon its second best result to letting him go. 1 year on a reduced contract with option to reassess his form and suas development - perfect. I'm pretty confident if his form remains same /go's down or he gets reinjured he'll be let go ahead of the 26 season and i rekon there'll be some clauses in there. The extra year secures his services more for 2025 imo, 26 will be sketchy depending on how 25 go's despite extension. I rekon he'd of left ahead of 25 season if we didn't give him at least another year. I'm wishing him all the best and hope he lights it up next year if all true.

Do you reckon he's confirming how much longer Bellamy will be around? Another 2 years and off in to the sunset?

Unlikely. I'm sure Belza doesn't know himself, so Ryan would be only guessing at best.
