Below is an article re: the Sharks Rd 1 NSW Cup win:
www.nswrl.com.au

Despite the dramas of the past week, the Cronulla Sharks opened their NSW Cup campaign with a hard fought win over the Wests Tigers 36-16 in a fiery clash at Sharks Stadium.

Playing the majority of the second half with no replacements because of injury, the Sharks dug deep for a courageous victory.

The Wests Tigers got off to a flying start when prop forward Michael Bullock raced onto a pass to score adjacent to the posts after five minutes of action.

The Sharks had a number of chances to equalise but poor options on the last tackle saw them fail to convert them into points.

With limited opportunities, the Wests Tigers increased their lead to 10-0 when centre Rory Brien spun out of a tackle and then stepped around Cronulla full-back Nathan Gardner to score in the 23rd minute.

An altercation between Wests Tigers’ Bodene Thompson and Sharks skipper Chad Townsend resulted in a penalty to the home side. That gave them good field position and they made the visitors pay.

After a knock on from the Wests Tigers, Cronulla lock-forward Tyrone Peachey picked up the ball from the scrum and raced over from close range to score under the posts. Chad Townsend kicked the extras to make it 10-6 with 32 minutes of the game gone.

Despite losing Nathan Stapleton to an ankle injury, the Sharks levelled up five minutes later when a short pass from Brett Finch put Maurice Blair over for the four pointer. Townsend’s conversion put Cronulla ahead for the first time at 12-10.

A head clash between Sam Tagataese and Finch saw the latter leave the field early in the second half. He did not return for the rest of the game.

The Sharks extended their lead in the 46th minute when Peachey kept the ball alive and Stewart Mills put winger Sosaia Feki over for a try in the corner.

Four minutes later, Cronulla was in again with Young Tonumaipea racing down the sideline before sending Blair over for his second try of the game.

More injury woes for the Sharks with Mills knocked out trying to tackle big Wests Tigers winger Taqele Naiyaravoro. He left the field midway through the second half but returned shortly after.

The Wests Tigers hit back in the 58th minute when Jarrod Farlow charged down a kick, collected the ball and raced 30 metres to score.

With the Sharks struggling with injuries and the Wests Tigers gaining momentum, Peachey stole the ball one-on-one from James Tedesco and then showed exceptional pace to race 70 metres to score in the 62nd minute. Townsend kicked the goal to make 30-16.

The Wests Tigers were dealt a blow when Masada Iosefa was sin binned in the 68th minute. Just three minutes later, Sharks forward Mark Taufa was also given 10 minutes for fighting.

The Sharks finished the game with a try to Ben Hampton, who collected a Sean Meaney kick and then raced 70 metres up the middle to score.
