Channel 9 to show Melbourne Storm free-to-air games live locally RUSSELL GOULD

THE rare sight of rugby league on Channel 9 on Sunday afternoon was not just a tease, with the network having assured Melbourne Storm that all of its free-to-air games would be shown live locally this season.
Nine used Sunday's grand final rematch between New Zealand Warriors and Manly as a lead-in to the first one-day cricket final, prompting local league fans to scratch their heads in confusion.

Last week's Round 1 matches on Thursday and Friday nights were not shown in Melbourne until well after midnight.

They were played as the NRL announced two games a week would be shown live in the US, adding to live coverage as far afield as Africa.

"But you can't watch it live in Melbourne. That doesn't seem right to me," Storm coach Craig Bellamy wrote in The Australian on Saturday.

It's believed, however, Nine managing director Jeff Browne has assured Storm officials any free-to-air games, including the Round 5 Friday night home clash with Newcastle, would be shown live on digital channel Gem, with the potential for any blockbusters to be shifted to the main channel.

But that commitment does not solve the problem as far as Storm chief executive Ron Gauci is concerned.

He said there should be a promise for all NRL free-to-air games to have decent coverage in Melbourne, and for that coverage to be promoted.

With the next NRL TV rights deal being negotiated, Gauci said it was crucial the winning broadcaster had a plan to develop and promote the game in all new markets.

"There was an announcement last week that games would be shown live around the world, yet Melbourne, the most passionate sporting city, struggles to get equal access," Gauci said.

"It's our view that whoever is successful in securing the broadcast rights is committed to the growth of the game. Their commitment should not just be showing the game live, but also to promote it through the programming at every opportunity.

"We want the broadcasters to show as many games as possible to grow the game. The way people see the game first is on TV."

It's believed every network interested in securing the NRL coverage, except Nine, has presented Storm officials with a plan on how it would promote and develop the game locally.

BILLY Slater's report for a high shot on Canberra fullback Josh Dugan in Saturday night's game was tossed out by the NRL match review panel yesterday.

lol @ Ch9, you can't half tell the tv rights negotiations are in full swing.

Too little too late as Ch.10 will get them.

I dont care if Channel 9 do show every Storm FTA game live into Melbourne this season or not. I dont even care if they did the unimaginable and showed every other NRL game live or even at a decent hour into Melbourne.

All I care about is Channel Nein getting the punt from the FTA rights and replaced by Channel 'Anyone else but Nine'. That would be the ultimate 'up yours wankers' to GTV 9 for years and years of mis-management and neglect of the Melbourne public and Rugby League fans.

Their failure to actively promote the Storm and Rugby League in Victoria has set back the NRL years in this state and a massive mistake on their part. Gallop is equally to blame since he's the douche that signed off on the contract that allowed them to do it, and failed to enforce their adherence to it when they strayed from it.

Just watch - now Nein won't schedule any more FTA Storm games beyond the Friday night Newcastle game. They might throw us a Sunday game but that'll be it.

If Nine get the rights again I'd expect normal service to resume in regards to telecasts in 2013 ie us getting shafted. They are just paying lipservice even though this is great news! Knights game should be on the main channel as should any game against Dragons, Broncos and Manly. The second last paragraph of that Sun article proves just how incompetent NEIN are!

I still expect Ten to get the rights. Poor Steve Quartermain will be out of a job quicksmart. Smug turd.

If Nein somehow get the rights again, I'm sure it won't be the same. Nein get first crack at a bid then the other networks can put in their bid. If another network has a better bid with fair, equal coverage nationwide (but not enough to break Nein's first and last bidding rights condition), Nein get the chance to match the bid. But I think they really would have to match it - not just the dollar amount. As long as another network says they're going to give everyone outside of NSW and Queensland equal coverage Nein will have to match it or they're out.

Of course, it won't come to that. Ten all the way.

Nine will die without rugby league and they know it. I'm expecting something shifty from them.

CHANNEL 9 boss Jeff Browne has boldly declared the battle for rugby league broadcast rights is effectively over before it even starts, saying: "We want the broadcast rights - and we'll win them."

Breaking his silence on the $1 billion battle with Seven and Ten for the rights for the next five years, Browne said Nine's league rights would not be slipping into the hands of their competitors.

He is so confident Nine - which has the first and last bidding rights under the existing agreement - will show rugby league next year that he has predicted they will have negotiations sewn up by June.

"We do rugby league best," Browne said. "But we know we'll have to stump up and grow the game.

"We've got to help the clubs and invest in the league. We're not trying to buy these cheaply, we're trying to invest in the sport. And that's our biggest asset. It's not only about the money, it's about the relationship and building the brand of rugby league."

It`s interesting that all this seems so obvious to him now but for the last few years Ch Nein couldn`t have given a toss about RL and certainly not about building the brand in Victoria. If they had any sense of decency they would be embarrassed to display their banners at our home games for the total contempt that they have shown Melbourne audiences since Storm`s inception. All they`ve done is program into areas that have already followed league and therefore has required absolutely zip additonal input from Ch Nein. Too little and way too late. Stuff them >:(
