Seems like the Daily Telegraph is doing a story on the poor coverage that League and Storm get down here and the fact that kids interested in the game have to sit through 'soft porn' ads for FTA games.

They seem to what to go after both the NRL and Nine on this.

Anyone else been contacted?

Not in todays from what I can see, but there is a very good Storm story though.
MEET the two AFL wunderkinds who have done the unthinkable in Melbourne: dumped Aussie rules for rugby league.

Tom Goodwin, the son of former Demons star Andy, and former Victorian under-14s captain Cameron Hansen are at the vanguard of a bold counterattack by the NRL on its rival code - in the heart of enemy territory.

And The Daily Telegraph can reveal the Victorian Government is backing the foray.

Good positive story from the Telegraph.  Might shut up some of those non-believers up North.

The non believers cannot be silenced.

These idiots thought that with-in a year or two the storm would have victorian  junior players playing with the first grade squad and that crazy...it was unrealistic. It takes time to build a club and to build the grass roots, the storm and nrl have to be congratulated for the effort they have put in. I think in the next 4-5 years even  bigger things will be happening. Vic Born juniors will be in or on the verge of NRL first grade for the storm, our new home ground will be getting crowds 20k+ ...channel nine will hopefully (dont hold your breath guys!) start showing games at a decent time!!!!

Ah, the irony. Qld and Vic will be regularly beating NSW in the crowd stakes.

Channel Nine's delayed Grand Final replay strewn with sex ads
By Josh Massoud | May 01, 2009 12:00am

Printer friendly Text size+-  THIS is how Channel Nine is promoting tonight's NRL Grand Final replay for Melbourne viewers - a delayed midnight telecast strewn with sex ads. And parents like Scott Hilditch are fuming. / The Daily Telegraph
CHANNEL 9's blackout of tonight's Grand Final replay in Melbourne has held Storm fans to ransom to a red-eye delayed broadcast strewn with erotic advertisements for the sex industry.
While the semi-pornographic commercials are designed to arouse late-night audiences, they've proved a turn-off for league-loving parents in Melbourne who won't allow their children to watch such explicit images.

Nine has enraged Storm fans by delaying tonight's Melbourne-Manly clash until midnight - prime time for adverts featuring naked women in suggestive poses and men struggling with erectile dysfunction. In a setback for the NRL as it strives for southern exposure ahead of next month's Origin opener at Etihad Stadium, families have vowed to boycott tonight's broadcast.

Melbourne viewers who endure the replay will be subject to no fewer than a dozen provocative commercials, with The Daily Telegraph counting 12 ads in the same timeslot on Nine this week.

Melbourne foundation member Simon Hilditch is among the appalled, refusing to allow his Storm-obsessed three-year-old Beckham to watch this evening's showdown.

The issue first raised its sordid head in Hilditch's Bayswater loungeroom six weeks ago, when he taped the replay of Melbourne's round-two clash against Brisbane that was also shown at midnight in Bleak City.

"We put the tape on the following morning and there were five kids in the loungeroom because we had a sleep-over the night before," Hilditch said.

"The very first ad break, virtually every commercial was for something about sex.

"There were women in bikinis, women naked, gyrating all over the place. For the children's sake, we had to switch it off.

"Beckham was very upset, but as responsible parents we can't allow children of that age to watch such smut."

All networks are entitled to broadcast the risque commercials after 10.30pm.

Nine's Melbourne program manager Len Downs said it was up to parents to be conscious of late-night material.

But Melbourne CEO Brian Waldron was furious his club's young fans were being blacked out by Nine's refusal to show rugby league at a more family-friendly timeslot.

"The point is we need to get our games shown on TV here earlier," Waldron said. "We're disappointed that Nine hasn't done so yet, particularly for the Grand Final replay."

According to Downs, however, Friday night Storm games are likely to remain among adult-only material whenever they are faced with an AFL match on rival network Seven.

Downs said the AFL's dominance over the city's sports-lovers meant Nine had to opt for female-friendly content, such as movie double My Super Ex-Girlfriend and Erin Brokovich, which will be screened in preference to the league tonight.

REVELATIONS in The Daily Telegraph today that the grand final replay – no less – between the Storm and Manly will be broadcast after midnight and littered with porno ads in Victoria is a blight on the game.

It is seriously time for the NRL to make a decision: get serious about promoting the game in Melbourne or flick the Storm and rep matches from Bleak City for good.

Of course, the Storm should remain. Under coach Craig Bellamy and captain Cameron Smith, they have established a club that has the best culture of any in the league.

Quite simply, they show some struggling and bumbling Sydney clubs how it should be done. They deserve their multi-million dollar “bubbledome” stadium that will be opened next year.

Melbourne crowds have shown they will embrace rep footy. That’s why the series opener is down there this season, and why the Victorian state government included the World Cup match between Australia and England in its Melbourne Cup carnival festivus.

But as long as Channel 9 keeps shunting Storm games to the latest possible time of midnight as per their contract, it will continue to alienate potential fans. Melbourne claims it’s the sporting capital of the universe. Yet they show grand final replays at the witching hour. What the?

When the next television deal comes up for renewal, the NRL must make it very clear that games must be shown within an hour of kick-off.

Otherwise, it should leave the Mexicans to what they do best: whinge about Sydney, watch Hey Hey It’s Saturday re-runs and blabber on about AFL.

Are you with me, readers, or against me? Join me live at 1pm today and we’ll fight it to the death.

This has also received good coverage on SEN and 2SM. Nein could use the HD channel to show it live, however this would require the anti siphoning legislation to be altered. Best bet is to write to Senator Conroy and ask that a modification be made that allows networks to use their alternate channels to show NRL games live, or at least earlier than their main channel in secondary markets. If we get in quick maybe we might see Australia V's NZ at a decent time next weekend.

Steamimg, agreed it may take longer, but you get my point, until we get that change we will continue to get nothing as we do now, well at least until the analogue shutdown in 2013. I'm going to find the details of Conroy's office at least and post them.
