WILLIE Isa took a small step towards filling Israel Folau's big shoes with a two-try haul as Melbourne beat Newcastle 32-24 in their NRL trial match at Princes Park.
Playing their only trial match in Melbourne, the Storm were almost at full-strength with World Cup stars Greg Inglis, Billy Slater and skipper Cameron Smith in their ranks, while the Knights left big guns such as Kurt Gidley, Jarrod Mullen and Steve Simpson at home.
With Folau departed for Brisbane and the retirement of veteran Matt Geyer, the Storm have two vacancies in the centres.
Joe Tomane and Will Chambers are the front-runners, however, with Chambers (knee) only playing in next Saturday's final trial against Brisbane in Caloundra, 20-year-old Isa took his chances against the Knights.
The former Penrith junior, who joined the club at the end of last season, grabbed two tries in a nine-minute period early in the first half as the Storm raced to a 22-0 lead against the shell-shocked Knights.
The visitors weren't helped by a poor kicking display by half-back Luke Walsh.
The remainder of Melbourne's six first-half tries were shared, with Inglis also getting among the point-scorers.
The 22-year-old, who spent the early part of the second half in the centres with Smith playing five-eighth and Ryan Hinchcliffe at hooker, looks a man mountain.
Now weighing around 106kg, Inglis also appears to have lost none of his pace, or his strength, as Knights hooker George Ndaira found out through a trademark Inglis fend as he raced through to score.
Both coaches made a raft of changes, both positional and in personnel, in the second half as Newcastle got the upper hand and managed to keep the Storm scoreless.
Centre Keith Lulia scored just before the 20-minute drinks break while Zeb Taia touched down with the converted try closing the gap to eight points, which proved the final score.
Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy rested his No.1 half-back Cooper Cronk from the match with his replacement James Maloney, new to the club from Wentworthville, impressive.

i enjoyed the 1st half, with our A team we did very well and were pretty much cruising, greg does look stronger now if thats possible
i thought the refs did well 1st half but then in the 2nd were blowing up for nothing and as usual we got about 20 penalies against us and 2 for....
The second half we lost some shape but really the 2 tries they scored came from dumb mistakes and poor cover, so all in all very happy and confident we willl do well.
Will be interesting against Brisbane if we look at how to beat Izzy, or I wonder if Bellyache was working on this before he left. I think Brisbane will take 6-10 games to get that new side together, but Izzy, Hodges and Hunt will hurt anyside if we are not alert

First half was so hectic with try scorers, we were scoring faster than I could text
Unfortunately with the circumstances it was difficult to pinpoint the scorers. I was around the 20 mark on the southern end and we were scoring all our tries up the northern end. Add to that the new players and the old players looking somewhat different to last year, a few like GI have grown a bit more hair, and then there was the sun to contend with. Plus no video screen so we got no replays and the sound system was atrocious so you couldn't make out what was being said.
Matt Cross looked strong, but has a few of his brother's faults. Knocking the ball on when hitting the line at speed, dropping the ball stone cold on another occasion. Maloney was solid, played half back for the first half, I think he might have played some 5/8th when Smith shifted into the halves at one point in the second half. Tomane slotted into fullback when Slater went off and Hinchcliffe finished off the game at hooker. There appeared to be one injury to a Storm player but he seemed to have worked it off so not sure if it will be a problem, couldn't see who it was as it was on the far side of the field. Only major injury worry that I saw was to the Knights player, De Gois who did his shoulder.
Two of the Knights tries were bullshit, with one the player was over the dead ball line and for another a player close to the try scorer was inside the 10 on the kick chase. At one point late in the second half the touch judge stopped as a Knights player clearly passed forward and the ref overruled him even though the touchie was in perfect position to call it and actually made the call.
