The Melbourne Storm today refused to comment further on rape allegations hanging over two players, instead preferring to do its talking on the field with a 54-0 hiding of Newtown in their final trial match before the season proper.
The pall of the latest round of sexual abuse claims to hit the code hung over a gloomy Henson Park as club officials bunkered down amidst the controversy.
Executive director John Ribot and coach Craig Bellamy each had little to add on the matter, which is currently subject to a police investigation.
Bellamy denied the imbroglio had affected his team’s mentality, before adding: "It was important to get on the footy field no matter what happened in the last three months."
The 18-man team opted for a ‘hit and run’ approach to the game, arriving in Sydney this morning before returning tonight.
Star trio Scott Hill, Steven Kearney and Matt Orford all missed the trip. Hill (ribs) and Kearney (ankle) were both rested as a precaution, while Orford was forced to skip the game after being plagued by dizzy spells during the week.
Bellamy said the half already underwent neurologist scans and the club would know the results on Thursday.
"He’s not sick, but he’s not 100 percent either. We had the tests done just to make sure he was okay," said Bellamy.
All three are expected to be fit for the Storm’s first game in a fortnight against Newcastle, but Bellamy isn’t counting on centre Steven Bell and fullback Robbie Ross to join them.
The news was brighter on the field, with the Storm emerging from the match unscathed. Despite persistent heavy rain and a makeshift halves combination in the form of Matt Geyer and Cameron Smith, Melbourne ran in 10 tries against a spirited, but ultimately outclassed, Jets outfit.
"We expected that’s how it was going to be," said Bellamy, whose team requested the hit out to preserve match fitness after drawing the bye first up.
The procession of 4 pointers took only three minutes to commence and was only interrupted in the second quarter, during which neither team managed to trouble the scorer.
Promising 19-year old fullback Steven Turner, who the Storm poached from Penrith last season, impressed with three tries. However, the man ahead of him – 2003 sensation Billy Slater – was good enough to deserve an early shower 30 minutes before fulltime.
Other to shine for in the driving rain included Alex Chan and Kirk Reynoldson, while David Kidwell won Bellamy’s vote as the team’s best.
