2012, round 18 we played Canberra at AAMI and lost.

We went on to lose a further 3 games until we snapped the losing streak in Round 22 against who else but Penrith... and who do we play this year in Round 22... the mother truckin Penny Panthers!

Bad thing for Paps with his size is he's always in and around bodies. This new knee one is just unfortunate but earlier in the game where he kicked the ball out to save a try scoring opportunity he was a millisecond away from breaking his leg. Not really sure what the club can do with him outside of hoping he gets better injury luck or we find a superior fullback.

My real concern is what do these injuries do for his confidence?

We’ve seen it before - when he came back last year from the concussion he seemed really reserved. His game is all about his speed at hitting the line and as a fullback (particularly at the Storm) his role will always involve having to get across at the back and clean up any threats in the way Billy Slater did.

Paps may have to change his style of play, fitness and conditioning, and even things like the length of his studs.
James tedesco was considered injury prone early in his career, and had to make changes to prolong it. Paps may be in the same boat unfortunately.

He has had terrible luck though.

Paps is brave beyond his years, almost reckless towards himself. His brilliance is that he puts his body on the line, every time. All other fullbacks are way more reserved

The rushed pass that led to the Raiders first try was probably down to this exact thing. He's an excitement machine to watch so I really hope he can get his body and mind right when he's back next season.

Tough choices

Does he learn from Tedesco and trade some speed for power
Or
Does he play 6 where he may be slightly better protected
Or
Does he stay as he is and see if luck changes?

I’d love option 3 but it comes with big risk!

So, looking at paps' stat's vs tedesco at a similar age, tedescos average was around 17.5
Tom trobjevic averaged around 14.75, and if you drop 2018 from that and incorporate 2022, it falls down to just over 10.
Ponga, the same age as paps has managed an average of 16.75

So yeah, paps has had a bastard of a run, but when compared to his peers, at the same point of his career, he isn't missing any more game time than they have/did.

Welch is definitely of concern, but I'll reserve judgement. The last five year average is over 16 games a season. And if you remove this seasons unfortunate injury, the previous 4 seasons he managed 20.5 games, which would be on a par with plenty of others.

If you do an ACL, it is relevant for the remainder of your career. You are never the same after it, ask anyone who has done one. You can dismiss it if you like.
