Storm v Panthers: Origin stars, Grant named
NRL.com
Tue 27 Jul 2021

The Panthers got the chocolates the last time they faced the Storm back in round three (12-10) but a lot has happened over the intervening 17 weeks.

The Storm have won 15 straight while the Panthers have lost two of their past six as injuries and Origin commitments began to take their toll.

But since these two are locked on 34 points, with 16 wins each, this Saturday night's contest holds plenty of appeal.

The minor premiership could well be decided if the winners can then hang on undefeated for the following five games - which is not beyond the capabilities of either side.

The Rundown

Team News
Storm: Harry Grant (hamstring) has been named in the reserves but is likely to require another week off as he makes his way back from injury.

"He's a very good chance to play but he does need to be 100 percent ready," Storm GM Frank Ponissi said this week. "We're not taking any risks with Harry."

Nicho Hynes holds on to the No.1 jersey with Ryan Papenhuyzen again named on the bench.

The Storm have won their past 11 games at Suncorp Stadium.

Panthers: No further changes are expected for Ivan Cleary's side after a raft of them were made on Tuesday.

Robert Jennings comes on to the wing to replace Origin star Brian To'o, who is expected to undergo syndesmosis surgery and miss around six weeks.

Tyrone May (knee) also faces a significant stint on the sideline. His absence sees Matt Burton move to five-eighth, with Brent Naden replacing him in the centres.

The Panthers have won three of their past five games against the Storm.

Key Match-up
Jarome Luai v Cameron Munster: Origin foes just weeks ago, the No.6s get to face off again and will be eager to get another win over the other, even if it's back in club land and not the interstate arena. Luai has 14 try assists and Munster just seven but Munster is coming into his favourite time of the year - the finals - as big games bring out his best.

Stat Attack
Considering these two sides are level on wins and losses at the top of the NRL ladder it's surprising to find the Storm way out in front for the number of tries after 19 rounds - 118 - compared with 88 to the Panthers.

Are probably the most obvious changes. I wonder if Lewis retains his spot on the bench over Pene though as he is able to cover more positions.
Aaron Pene Makes better runs imo kinda pointless not having Pene

Interesting to see that we have 5 of the top 10 NRL era defences and 3 of the top 10 attacks (one in a year we missed the finals - 2001)

He's played every game so far so it could be just him getting a week off.

Three cheers for Queen Palachook and her lock down loving Labor Party. She's the same idiot who was totally fine with traveling to Tokyo (where there are a lot of COVID-19 cases) prounce around like the Queen she thinks she is. Comes back and hey presto locks down the South of the State for a whole 6 cases!! Any reason the matches couldn't be played without crowds? I'm so sick of these idiots ruining our lives!!! Rant over :)

What I don’t understand, is what is the point of the bubble then? The players, staff, etc all living under lockdown-esque conditions so the game can go on, but as soon as a couple of cases pop up, they are treated just like every other Joe Blow who hasn’t been living in a bubble.

It makes zero sense.
