Keeping Nicho

Somehow we have to find a way to keep him next season.
He wants to be a starter.
I am currently watching Penrith. They have already lost Matt Burton next season, but ( too late it seems ) they have found a spot for him in first grade. Like Hynes he can play 1,6 or 7. Those spots are taken, so he has found a spot at centre.
Could this not be an option for Nicho for next year ( or even this year, if we get our 1,6, 7 and 9 back ) ? Reimis to the wing, and Nicho inside him .
What do you think ? To my untrained eye, Centre seems the least specialist position. Often back row forwards are found there. In SOO year blokes like Wighton and Capewell played out there. Why couldn’t Nicho play that role ?

I think Nicho could be good at the Broncs if they add Hodgson as rumoured.
I like the idea of him starting and switching with Paps between full back and playing around the ruck. He needs space in the middle so playing him in the centre’s just doesn’t work for me.

I think Storm letting Brenko go is on purpose to open a spot for Nico in the centres

I think it’s more of a reflection of the current Jennings / Smith combo clicking and the Broncos cashing in on an out of favour premiership and origin player than it is trying to squeeze Nicho in.
I will say this - it’s better business to go after a player who is knocking the door down asking for opportunities (Nicho) than it is going for a bloke who is in and out of the side on form (Croft a couple years ago).
In the right set up Nicho may be one of the rare cases where his career goes ok after leaving the Storm.

GI went to Centre, Munster could go to Centre? I agree though, everyone is doing their job nicely and apart from occasionally not passing I think Reimis' defence is first rate.

Its a matter of money.
If the Broncos or the Cowboys or the Knights offer him over $400-500k a year for 3 years or longer and tell Nicho that he is a starter, there is nothing we can do to stop him going.
He would be stupid not to take the money.
NRL stands for not real long.

Big difference is that GI was never a 5/8. Sure he played with the 6 on his back, but he was only ever a centre with a roving commission (yes, I know he won Clive there, but he still didn't have the passing game or the game management to be a proper 5/8). Munster is a legitimate ball player with strength, speed and vision.
I'd be more inclined to play Nicho as a ball playing centre with Remis on the wing and unfortunately Jennings to miss out.

We can't keep Dale, Cheese, Harry and Nicho.
Some of the $$$ that teams are talking about for Nicho are around $600k a year for 4 years. he would have to take a significant haircut to stay.

AFL teams Hawthorn and Geelong kept their powerhouse premiership teams together for years by everyone taking a haircut.
It can be managed with everyone still getting decent coin if playing career and Team success is regarded as being important.

Melbourne halfback Cooper Johns can’t see his close friend and teammate Nicho Hynes staying at the Storm.
Hynes has openly admitted that he wants a guaranteed starting spot at NRL level, which appears unlikely to come to fruition at the Storm due to Ryan Papenhuyzen and Cameron Munster holding his preferred positions.
It is believed that Brisbane, Cronulla and St George Illawarra are keen on the utility, and Johns feels it might be best for Hynes to move on.
“I think he’s stuck behind a lot of good players here,” Johns said on SEN 1170 Drive with Joel and Fletch.
“I think what’s best for him, I can’t see it being at the Storm.
“It’s never going to be a bad decision to stay at the Storm, look what it has done for his football, and he’s turned into a superstar and the player we know how good he can be.
“But thinking for his football and what’s best in the interest for his career, I can’t see him really staying.”
Johns was then asked what he feels his teammate would be worth on the open market.
“I don’t know much about the salary cap, but I know there’s a lot of players out there on a lot of money,” Johns replied.
“The way Nicho’s playing at the moment, he’s one of the form players of the competition.
“I can’t see why he wouldn’t be on more than half a million dollars. I’d throw that at him.”

Just like his old man. Mouthing off with little or no information. All it does is feed the tabloid media (which in Australia these days is most of it) and unsettle the fans.
Maybe Cooper needs to learn when to keep his mouth shut.
