Melbourne Storm are closing in on the signature of highly regarded Brisbane winger Xavier Coates in what would be another shocking recruitment blow for Broncos fans. We first reported the Origin winger meeting with Storm coach Craig Bellamy on the Gold Coast last December. On Saturday, Coates flew to Melbourne to check out the Storm’s facilities.

Dave Donaghy already sooking about Broncos players being "poached".
For many years players would take less money to play at the Broncos; such was the attraction of potential premierships and Origin Jerseys. Maybe Dave, you should be wondering why players no longer want to stay in Brisbane???

This would be huge . Reimis on one side and Xavier on the other - both excellent in taking the high ball - will have Bellamy and his kickers Hughes and Munster licking their lips. A very different winger from The Fox, but a great replacement.

Ah yes, Dave Donaghy, who himself got poached and tried to break his contract . Pot. Kettle. Black .

AND...the same Dave Donaghy who would be leading the charge to recruit Coates if he was still the CEO at Storm.

I understand he's got to lead the charge for his new Club...but seriously......pick your issue more intelligently Dave..

I reckon if you look back - the Storm have probably lost the most talent to poaching of any club.

We built the last 10 years around Smith, Slater and Cronk on big coin. There are loads of players we picked up young, developed and lost.

I remember making a list of 1-17 two years ago for a laugh of past players still in the nrl - genuinely would have been a top 4 side (the guy I made the list for is a warriors fan).

The current crop of past players would beat a lot of sides

Only about 3 of those players are top class

Tino, McLean, Harris and Walker are the 4 I'd want back

The key point for me is most have regressed since leaving the Storm, but if many had stayed you know they would have been much better players than we give credit for now.

So you ask the question to Dave Donaghy why wouldn’t you want to come down to Melbourne just for your development?

The scary part for Dave Donaghy is the same will end up being the same for CEOs!

Good point. Dave was an untested CEO when we gave him a shot. He had a strong board, strong roster, but most importantly for him (I think), the best football department in the game. He was in an environment where he just had to play his role and got a lot of accolades for our success. Now take him out of that strong support network and see how he shines. He may still go on to do a great job for Brisbane, but you are right in the comparison to the players.

I don't think he is off to a great start though... Torch the bridge with the Storm on his way out and now complaining about clubs throwing massive money at players they developed, when everyone works from the same budget. He surely understands the importance of cap management, yet has this public whinge anyway where nobody is going to have sympathy? Just an odd way to kick things off in a new gig.

They still dont get it in Sydney, our whole system is miles above all but a couple of their Clubs there. Remis Smiths comments last night about how the Melbourne storm has made him a better player and a better person. Its not all about money.

WHY GREG ALEXANDER WOULD BE "STUNNED" IF STORM LAND XAVIER COATES

I would be stunned if (Xavier Coates) goes to the Storm,” Alexander said on SEN 1170 Mornings with Matt White.

“The Storm are the type of club that won’t pay big money for wingers, otherwise they’d keep Josh Addo-Carr.

“In their salary cap break-up and who gets the money at the Storm, it will be their spine.

“It’ll be (Ryan) Papenhuyzen, (Cameron) Munster and they’ve just signed Jahrome Hughes on a $800,000 deal, and it’ll also be Harry Grant.

“They’ll also desperately want to keep Brandon Smith, but he wants to play dummy-half.

“They spend their money and fill up the other spots, this is why the Storm have been so good. They fill up players on the rest of the team for players on value money.

“I can’t see the Melbourne Storm paying half a million which is what Xavier Coates would be asking for. They can’t afford to pay half a million for a winger.”

If the Storm sign Coates he could act a like-for-like replacement for Addo-Carr who has signed at Canterbury from 2022.
