From what I have seen from the Melbourne Storm so far this year; we are doing none of the essential “Melbourne Storm” like things that have made us great over the past 19 years. We are just expecting it to happen. We are not working together like a team. Our play is sloppy. Our kicking is terrible. Our lack of use of our wingers is unforgivable and when we do give it to them; they are locked in the corners. Each player is trying to do too much and just expects to pour it on at some point. Bellamy isn’t getting his message through. We look like we have done absolutely no preseason training together. Even Will Chambers fighting Gallen – terrible discipline. Yes, the penalties are bad but if you know the referees are going to blow the pea out of the whistle; you have to play accordingly. Back-chat and being marched 10 so many times. DROPPED BALL is phenomenally high. A few of the blokes drinking their own bath water. Croft being a long way off. No consistency. No flow.

We look like a shell of last year.
As if we over celebrated and just expect it to happen again without making it happen.
We were smashing teams last year and now we can’t even hardly score tries
You only need to be 5% off in this league and you are cactus.
And we look like we are picking and choosing hen we want to play.

If I remember correctly, we weren’t great at the start of last year or the year before. Most of our World Cup players didn’t come back til late in the preseason. Smith was only back for a couple weeks. It’s gunna take some time for it to click, we’re not gunna win every game. There are a lot of positives we can take out of our start, we could just as easily have been 4-0, the Tigers got a lucky last minute try to win that game, the sharks game was close and could of went either way, it was just unfortunate it wasn’t our night. We comfortably beat our bogey team in the Bulldogs and we were always in control against the preseason favourites and last years runner ups the cowboys. Plus we haven’t been full strength yet. Not everything has got to be negative

Yea, if you go back we started the season pretty poorly last year as well so it isn't a hangover. Had a scrappy win against the Dogs. Could've easily lost the Brisbane game. Wests Tigers led 14-0 before we came back and a few weeks later couldn't do anything against the Sharks.

Obviously we weren't giving away a million penalties but our attack and completion % were low to start the season. It took us awhile to actually click into the 2017 Storm. We have to be a lot more patient in this years team given who isn't here anymore.

I don't think that there's any doubt we are in a slight hangover scenario.

The only relevant issues will be:

1. whether the boys can get themselves out it;
2. how quickly they can get themselves out of it (if they do);and
3. how effectively they get out of it.

They'd wanna start start turning it round really effectively and really quickly if they want 2018 to amount to anything...
Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time

Referee visit clears the air

Sometimes all it takes is a conversation to get things back on track.

NRL referees flew down to Melbourne on Tuesday and paid a visit to Storm training to offer feedback on how Craig Bellamy’s side can better adapt to rule interpretations.

After four rounds Storm have conceded more penalties (45) than any other team in the competition and last week 19 penalties was the most by any team in the NRL era.

Rather than scratch their heads, the Storm coaching staff sought council from the game’s whistle blowers and it appears to have paid instant dividends.

“We have worked hard on it, the referees came down yesterday and did some work with us,” Bellamy said.

“Hopefully we can see some results there on Saturday night.”

For players, the responsibility lies in breaking out of bad habits that in the past have gone unnoticed but are now being called out by referees in the blink of an eye.

“When you’ve done things one way for a long time you’ve got that muscle memory that comes into it,” Ryan Hoffman said.

“For us as players the referees are setting the rules and we just need to abide by them. We got some clarity on a few things from the referees yesterday which I think were quite helpful, we put those things into practice at training so hopefully we will see some much better discipline from us.”

Hopefully our discipline is much better this week, as a result of the referee visit. That and the notable relaxation afforded some other teams post last Friday night.

Probably 4 weeks late, but hey, I'm glad that visit has now taken place.

If only Gallop had come to visit when he should have.

Our grand final opponents from last year appear to have a hangover from it too.

The reason to keep focused

Four tries, three losses.

Four words that have Melbourne Storm believing it is far from the doom and gloom certain pundits would have you believe.

It each defeat so far this season, the men in purple have only allowed a total of four tries combined.

Storm have the fourth best defence in the competition after the opening five rounds.

Now if the team can start to take care of the football, the performances will start to click into gear.

“Our effort has been fantastic the last few weeks in particular,” Tim Glasby said.

“Our defence has been really pleasing. In the three games we’ve lost, we’ve had a total of four tries scored against us which is promising.

“If we can bring that effort in our defence and fix that completion rate we will be putting ourselves in good stead.

“We know what is going wrong with our game which is really good.

“At least we can pinpoint a real spot to fix up and we can work on that, that is a real positive. We’ve got some positives to take and some things to work on so we will keep doing that.”

Storm take on the Newcastle Knights this Friday from 6pm at AAMI Park. All kids will be given FREE entry to the game with the purchase of every adult ticket.
