Melbourne's leading try-scorer in 2003, Billy Slater, has been named at centre in the Storm team for a trial against Tweed Seagulls at Noosa on Saturday night.

Finally Billy's getting a run back in the centres where he belongs!!!

Storm will play its first trial match in Noosa on Saturday against Queensland Cup team Tweed Heads.

Bellamy named a preliminary squad yesterday, with fullback Robbie Ross, prop Rodney Howe, five-eighth Scott Hill and utility back Andrew McFadden all selected to make their return from long-term injury.

McFadden has been named at half-back in a team predominantly made up of young players and those on the fringe of first-grade selection.

Ross was named at full-back, while Howe and Hill were named on the bench. Penrith recruits Steve Turner and Luke Dyer have also been selected.

The surprise selection was last year's rookie sensation Billy Slater in the centres.

Slater, recovering from a bout of osteitis pubis, will need to pass a fitness test before being cleared to take his place.

With Ross fit and Turner having impressed in the pre-season, Slater might be forced to switch to the centres this season. But Bellamy said not too much should be read into selections for the opening trial.

"He won't play a full game, but he'll have a bit of a run at centre or on the wing and we'll see how he goes," Bellamy said.

It seems a pretty obvious decision to have Billy in the centres I don't know what deKroo is so surprised about That's where he started for the Storm & he was only converted into a fullback because Robbie got injured.

Also in the article is how the Storm's training has been further disrupted by earthworks. First choice training venue Gosch's paddock needed drainage works & then the motocross at OP over the weekend has damaged the OP turf so badly that it will be three to four weeks before the players can use it again

This has left our kickers without any posts to practise with!

i dont think KArl was surprised over where he is playin but more surprised because he has a injury that needed surgery.

Good to see some of the boys returning from long-term injuries, especially McFadden. He needs a massive year after last years poor season. While we're on the subject of players returning from long term injuries, how is Jake Webster going? He's the Victorian guy who did his knee last year. Is he still around the club? Fit?

Good luck to the other new guys as well, hopefully everyone gets through it injury free!!

from what i have heard jake has been training good and i have seen him in a few pics training hard all our injurie probs look to be over ,except a littl bit of niggalin ones..

I read that article this morning and also couldn't work out what the surprise was about Slater playing in the centres if he is fit. The comment about that is that with Ross and Turner having good preseasons, Slater may be forced into the centres. That is his true position and where he will be at his best. Great news to see him named though. Hope he is ready and firing for round 2 this season.

As for the goal kicking practice, there are numerous grounds around with goal posts. Firstly, the VRL run a competition so those teams have grounds, and also there is a Rugby Union comp and their grounds would also have posts. Shouldn't be too hard to figure that out Mr Bellamy
