Way too harsh. And I think foolish.
Punish the guy for getting injured in the course of playing the game? It's not like he was f-ing around and crashed his motorbike or fell off the garage roof, he was actually out there playing when he got hurt.
Putting an overall value on his probable contribution is one thing, but agreeing a value and then saying " but if you get hurt playing for us we are going to punish you by reducing your income" is quite another. It would be a huge F YOU to the guy, and would certainly make any player we tried to attract (or indeed retain) think twice.
Eh you can view it as him getting bonuses if he passes certain game thresholds. See it in the nba with a few players.

That is ELITE fb money.

I can almost guarantee, kennedy, sloan, bula, kini, weekes, gutho, tracey , cnk, maybe drinkwater...are all not on 1 mill plus. paps is in line with that group, albeit maybe slightly better. he is not elite 1 mill plus with the likes of teddy, walsh, ponga, edwards, mitchell, hammer, turbo. That's why those last few names are all rep mainstays and papa hasn't been there yet and likely wont.
None of those have won a Clive Churchill medal or a premiership …he literally could command three time what we wanna give him twice what other clubs wanna give him …he should be a multimillionaire contract wise…he is already at that with sponsor and third party deals …just need to find more for him to stay

We are not talking about a healthy player here. If there is a team out there willing to give him $1.5 million a season then good luck to them.

Three times??? Have you lost it sal?!

2.25million a season hey?? 650k more than the current highest paid player in game?

He was a different player when he won the clive/comp. That was before all the hia, knee and ankle injuries and he lost his top end speed. Absolutely he was a million dollar player then.

Thankfully by all reports we are hearing someone in the football department (ponissi) knows how to manage a salary cap and squad as im sure if they weren't in line with my thinking the deal would be done. We would have the room in the cap for the salary hes asking, but theres clearly another sticking point, and I bet it's not too dissimilar to my concerns.

There are players that need pay buffs to stay that wont if pap gets a million plus to stay. Who do you suggest we let go?? Wishart, sua, or both?? Or just flaunt the cap again maybe?

This. If we try and win a bidding war for a player with such serious injury issues, we are setting ourselves up for failure.

Even $750K is a gamble, but feels almost right. After missing so much time, after the club looking after him so well, for that offer to be rejected so he can test the open market - doesn’t leave a good taste in my mouth to be honest.

Its a reminder how lucky we were with the big 3 years ago injury wise. Apart from Billy's shoulder in the final years of his career we never had large chunks of our salary cap on the sideline.

We really haven't seen pap play a solid season since 2020, with the team being forced to cover the loss of him for large chunks of a season 4 years in a row now. I just believe a small guy like him in a such a taxing position who's lost confidence in his body and contact is really affecting our chances of winning a premiership every year.

Weird reference. Orford was incredibly durable.

Nothing to do with his fitness / durability. I meant when Orford left to go (back) to the Eagles, It played out, and out, and out, and out. In the long run it worked out very well for us with Cooper Cronk being fashioned in to a superstar half back
