Channel 7 has annouced that it has been joined by Channel Ten to bid for the broadcasting rights of the AFL.
With Seven having the 'last rights' to the bidding for the broadcasting of the AFL and Channel Ten now joining them it is felt that Nine wont be close to the running to get the rights.
Channel 7 are currently sueing Nine, Ten, Telstra, News Ltd and Foxtel over the broadcasting of the footy and it is believed that Channel Ten will now be taken out of that suit by Seven on the understanding that Ten put in more money than they currently do for the rights.
The blow to Eddie is that if Nine do miss out on the rights it is felt Nine will pull out all stops with other sports (League being one of them) to hurt the ratings of the AFL. This means League will be given a bigger go across the country by Nine.

i don't like it.
i don't think for a moment that nine will try to imporve it's league coverage, especially not in melbourne or the western states. why should it? if seven and ten are both taken out of the picture, it has no competition for the rights, and league will be coming hat in hand to nine again. Watch for cheap rights and crap coverage. Melbourne will certainly not get any better, because they will continue to pedal out the line that league doesn't rate, and use the money they save on the league rights to buy more american tv series for prime time.
couple that with the increased number of ads displayed by nine mid coverage (orford makes a bust, watch out for the fantastic new series of csi miami thursday nights at 9:30, slater scores under the posts) and it is all bad news for league in general.
and for those interested, the HS write up of the story is here

I disagree TD, one of the rumours going around is that Ch 7 will televise Friday and Sunday AFL games with Ch10 showing the Saturday games. This would leave Ch10 free to compete for the NRL rights.
So there still may be an auction of the NRL FTA TV rights.

This one has a long way to go yet. This is just the very early stages of the bidding war. It is unclear what it will mean for the Storm anyway. If Nine loses AFL it will step up the hunt for something big to replace it like the Commonwealth and/or Olympic Games.
What I'm loving is how personal Eddie is taking this - apparently he said on the footy show "if Nine misses out on the footy rights, it will be a tragedy for AFL". Uhm - Eddie - Nein have the rights for the NRL - and THAT's a TRAGEDY!

many people's been saying that if 9 loses AFL, they're putting up tennis or motor sports or something else in place. tennis? yeah right! like tennis is 30 weeks long with audience-pulling non-majors. seriously, people are only attracted to grand slams unless they're diehard tennnis fanatics who just have to see their heroes in every tournament out there. With motor sports, how many have been burned by nine's treatment of formula one? As 10 is holding rights to F1, V8, and NASCAR and maybe some lower profile races, they're not going to just give them away.
maybe 9 would grab a european soccer comp?

careful there... you're sounding exactly like those who bash Storms ratings in Victoria...Thunderstruck wrote:many people's been saying that if 9 loses AFL, they're putting up tennis or motor sports or something else in place. tennis? yeah right! like tennis is 30 weeks long with audience-pulling non-majors. seriously, people are only attracted to grand slams unless they're diehard tennnis fanatics who just have to see their heroes in every tournament out there. This is interesting, if Channel 7 do continue with their court case and now have taken Ten conviently out cause they have alligned themselves with them, their chances of winning the case will have diminished greatly, cause they are pretty much saying Nine, Telstra and News did the wrong thing, but Ten were perfectly fine....
If that happens, the situation could emerge that Sevens loses a small fortune over the case, cause it wont be cheap take that group to the courts, and perhaps even run the risk of being counter-sued.
Now if that happens, that then changes the whole bidding scenario again. Channel 10 just want a high profile football code, so its either League or AFL, they honestly don't care who, they just want the big sport in their profile, cause of the sponsorship it brings in.
Cause of their desperation as such not to be left with nothing, Channel 10 will allign themselves with anyone...atm thats with 7 cause they will feel that Channel 7 will be in the better position cause they can guarentee nation wide friday and sunday coverage live....9 can't, but the whole 'what the AFL wants' could change again.
Getting back to the League, in many ways it wont matter who gets the AFL rights, you will still get every station putting in an offer for at least a slice of the League pie. All three stations have expressed interest, and lets face it, if you are running a business which requires ratings, you are going to try and snap up one of the largest rating sports, which League is.
That said, it would be in our favour the more TV companies with money out there that need something for their portfolio. Maybe Channel 9 getting the AFL outright would be the best thing for us, I could live with a 7 & 10 double.

I'm with you yakstorm. I think league would be better off if 9 won the AFL rights. As Mr Packer is a league fan and values his friday night football over just about everything, they wouldn't be looking to lose the league rights without a fight. If nine win the AFL rights, and seven has been quoted to have a major interest in the NRL, the money offered up for the rights could be quite large. If 7 and 10 get left with little or no AFL i'd say they would be looking toward the NRL's tv rights as a major source of revenue. And the bidding war would be on!
We've already seen how excited the AFL players and clubs are about all this extra money they are expecting from the AFL TV rights, I'm sure if more money is therefore sourced for the NRL it could only help grow the game
