Ron Reed
Check out this, my brother wrote and nasty email to the herald sun (Ron reed) about
his negative article last week on the storm launch. We got a reply and then
sent him one, its quite funny!!
This is the first email:
Hey Ron,
Did you see the 11,000 people almost turned up to the storm game on
sunday?..The game that was on offer on sunday was world class and no AFL
game could get even close in terms of entertainment.
Your article in the Herald Sun dated the 9th of March 2005 couldn't of been
further of the truth. It takes any team a long time to get established.
Look at the Sydney Swans, they averaged well below 8,000 in their first 10
years and look at them now. After 20 odd years they started to bring in
the success.
The storm need time to get established, and articles like yours don't help
the storms case what so ever. So next time you write an article about the
storm, make sure you know what you are talking about.
Just wait and see, the storm will be successful, and it will operate
happily alongside the AFL (Australia Fairy League).
Anyway I hope you take my advice because I cant see you being a very
successful journalist with that kind of article and attitude.
Phil
Then his reply was:
Hey Phil,
Give me a break ... I'd say that attendance (closer to 10,000 than
11,000, by the way) is unders for the first game of the season on a
beautiful day with no other sport on in town. And while I didn't see it, a
48-10 scoreline smacks more of a walkover than world-class entertainment.
Mate, perhaps you'd better tell the Strom people they don't know
what they're talking about, either. The column I wrote was based squarely
on
the theme of their launch, namely that if they don't get more support, and
pronto, they're history. If you'd read to the end of the copy, you'd have
seen Robbie Kearns quoted as saying exactly that.
But thanks for the feedback. It's always appreciated. -- Ron Reed
and finally our reply
Thanks for the reply Ron.
Just a few things though mate;
(1) It was a long weekend, it was 35 degrees and I think the beach would be
more attractive on a day like that, so I don't think 10,484 was too bad.
(2) Last time I checked, storm was not spelt strom as you put below...maybe
you should learn how to spell?
Anyway you know what they say, no press is bad press, so maybe you did help
us out. Just more of the positive stuff about the storm, because they are
going to be around for a long time down in Melbourne. Considering the tv
ratings for the NRL grand final last year peaked at 590,000 and averaged at
390,000 I think you could say there is definitely a market in Melbourne for
rugby league, the storm just have to find a way to target those people.
Thanks Ron.
Phil
We are still waiting on his reply.

Sorry to be so picky routy 21 but if you're going to write a letter of complaint to someone, you really should make sure all your grammar and punctuation is 100% accurate, otherwise it just loses all credibility.
What would pass as a rant on a messageboard forum would not be good enough for a formal letter of complaint, yet people think it's fine.
In particular, when you criticised Ron Reed's spelling of storm (strom), yet your own letter had several errors.
Anyway, good on you for sending it in and letting Ron Reed know how you feel and I'm sorry if I've offended you at all. I'm all for the newspapers giving Storm a fair go, but like I said, the letter-writing has to be spot on to be credible. It is, after all, credibility that Melbourne Storm is trying to achieve in this AFL-ridden city/state!
