Late fade costs SG Ball team victory
23/02/2011 12:38:31 PM

Melbourne Storm’s SG Ball side started the 2011 season on the weekend with a disappointing loss to a determined Canberra Raiders side by 32-24 at Seiffert Oval in Queanbeyan.

Storm looked to have the game wrapped up midway through the second-half after a great try to Herschel Gideon put them ahead 24-10, however a failure to complete their sets enabled the Raiders to charge home to victory in front of their home crowd.

Storm coaching staff has identified consistency, fundamental errors and the play the ball as the main issues for their inexperienced team, who despite trying hard all game were eventually beaten by a better team on the day.

Despite going down to the Raiders the Storm had a number of good performances, in particular Pride Petterson-Robati, Richie Kennar, James Desaxe and Herschel Gideon.

Storm now travel to Perth to play the W.A Reds on Saturday and will be looking for a big improvement in the battle of the Affiliated States. The game will be played at Ken Allen Field in Fremantle at 11am W.A time (2pm AEDT).

I'm looking forward to reading a full review/wrapup of today's game but just read this over at RLeague.com
Reds 34 - Storm 24. Good win by the reds, the ref gave the sin bin a bit of a work out, 3 reds players & 4 storm players. The storm played the last 9 minutes with 11 after having 2 sent to the bin while leading 24 - 22.

I asked the question about the half time score and the sinbins and got this response:
Reds & Storm were 18 all at halftime, 4 in the bin for slowing down the play the ball, 1 grapple tackle & the last 2 for dissent.
Sounds like the ref lost control of the game. Expect to see him reffing NRL games in a year or two.

Why?

WA juniors are strong, thus their success in the affiliated cup over the years.

Ummm weve been touching them up at U15 and U18 level the last few years, there is a distinct gap growing between the 2 states and on top of that WA do not recruit gun juniors like we do.

That is why

Fair enough, sounds like you are underestimating the WA boys though.

4 hr flight, 40 degree heat.... 3 hrs time difference... couldn't that give the home side some advantage?

Round 3 already, after this week 1/3 of the regular season will be over for the junior reps. I think it's crical to get a win this week to continue our short but successful history in the comp and make the finals again. But I don't think we have had a home game yet have we?

I also would like to see the Western Australian Reds, North Sydney Bears and Central Coast Centurions do well.

Great news that Solomona is back he was going great in the trials until he hurt his thumb scoring a try.
Storm will welcome the return of star centre DJ Solomona from injury and he will add some spark to the back-line in this match. Storm will also be looking for an improved showing from their strong forward pack who must dominate their opposition this week if they are to win this crucial game.
