Storm opts for youth in NRL Nines squad
melbournestorm.com.au
Tue 11 Feb 2020

A youthful Storm side led for the first time by co-captains Tui Kamikamica and Sandor Earl will take to the field for this week’s 2019 NRL Nines in Perth.

The 18-man squad named today for the pre-season tournament has plenty for members and fans to be excited about.

Cameron Munster, who is the squad’s chief playmaking option, is the only player who will back up from the Storm team that last took on the Nines challenge in Auckland in 2017.

New signing Brenko Lee will make his first appearance in Storm colours at HBF Park while Jason Ryles will have the coaching responsibilities.

Young guns Marion Seve and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui will bring the experience they gained from taking Samoa to the final of the World Nines in Sydney last October, while centre Justin Olam represented PNG in the same tournament.

Storm development players Chris Lewis, Trent Loiero, Dean Ieremia, Judda Turahui and Siti Moceidreke will also get their chance to impress.

Lewis, a 26-year-old from the Sunshine Coast Falcons, is a back-rower who has played 55 matches in the Intrust Super Cup, including 24 in 2019. He is a qualified schoolteacher who taught at Caloundra High School last year before earning a development contract with Storm.

Loiero is a junior from the Kawana Dolphins club on the Sunshine Coast and has been part of the Storm Pathways program since he was 15. He played for Queensland under-18s in their win against NSW last year and will turn 19 shortly after the Nines.

Ieremia, 18, is a Victorian product who has been with the Storm Pathways program since he was 16. He played for the Thunderbolts in SG Ball competition last year and also represented Victoria in the national schoolboys carnival.

Turahui is another 18-year-old who can fill a forward role. He was signed by the Storm as a 15-year-old from Taranaki in New Zealand and came to Melbourne after attending Kings College in Auckland.

Moceidreke is an outside back who scored nine tries in 19 appearances for the Falcons last season. The 25-year-old has represented Fiji six times, played one NRL match for South Sydney in 2017 and has also lined up with Mounties and North Sydney in the NSW Canterbury Cup.

Storm’s six All Stars representatives have been rested to allow them the best possible possible preparation for the following week’s Indigenous All Stars versus Maori All Stars clash on the Gold Coast.

Melbourne have been drawn in Pool 4 with Brisbane, Manly and North Queensland.

The pool games will be against the Sea Eagles on Friday night (10.30pm Vic time) and Broncos (5.10pm Saturday Vic time).

The top two teams in each pool will advance to the quarter-finals.

The final is scheduled for 10pm Saturday (Vic time).

All matches will be on Fox Sports and Kayo.

Interesting that Tui and Sandor were given the captaincy ahead of Munster. That would have likely cut him deep...

A short history of Storm at the Nines
melbournestorm.com.au
Tue 11 Feb 2020

2014
Ryan Hoffman was given the honour of leading Melbourne Storm in the first NRL Nines tournament played in front of huge crowds at Eden Park in Auckland.

Our 16-man squad included a young Cameron Munster as well as the experience of internationals Will Chambers, Kevin Proctor and Tohu Harris.

Munster and Chambers scored tries in the first-up 14-11 loss to Penrith but Storm bounced back in round two with a double from Chambers plus Mahe Fonua crossing in an 18-12 win against South Sydney.

Needing to beat St George Illawarra in the final pool game to have any chance of reaching the quarter-finals, Storm conceded the first two tries but then hit back with an amazing length-of-the-field Mitch Garbutt try after the halftime siren.

Fonua then put the Storm in front but a late Brett Morris try ended Melbourne’s tournament with a 14-10 loss.

2015
At the second Auckland Nines Storm created a little piece of history by joining Wests Tigers in becoming the first clubs to wear eye-catching sleeveless jerseys.

There were plenty of familiar names in Storm’s squad, captained by Will Chambers, with Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Kenny Bromwich, Suliasi Vunivalu and Tim Glasby competing in the Nines for the first time.

The second Nines ended up being a repeat of the first for Melbourne, with one win from three in the pool games not enough to advance to the quarter-finals.

Kurt Mann and Hymel Hunt scored for Storm in a first-up 17-8 loss to North Queensland but Storm kept their chances alive to downing Penrith 20-4 in the second pool game. The damage came through the outside backs with a double to Young Tonumaipea adding to tries from Chambers and Marika Koroibete.

A red-hot Rabbitohs stopped Storm from progressing when they scored a 24-4 victory in the final round. Cameron Munster put the only points on the board for Melbourne with a trademark stepping run in the first half, while South Sydney went on to claim the title.

2016
The third instalment of the NRL Auckland Nines saw Melbourne Storm reach the finals for the first time on the back of a youthful squad with an average age of just 22.

Blake Green, the oldest member of the team at 29-years-old, took on the captaincy role, while assistant coach Adam O’Brien was given the coaching responsibilities.

Disregarded as a title threat, Melbourne made a spectacular start with back-to-back victories against Parramatta (14-4) and South Sydney (18-12) sealing a last eight spot.

Cameron Munster lined up for his third consecutive Nines tournament and put Storm on the board first against the Eels. Richie Kennar and Blake Green rounded out the tryscorers.

Three players who went on to feature in the 2017 premiership success – Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Kenny Bromwich and Curtis Scott – were the tryscorers against the defending champion Rabbitohs.

A 26-7 defeat against the Sydney Roosters in the shootout to determine the pool winners was only a minor setback.

Kennar made it two tries for the tournament in the loss to the Roosters and then made it three as Storm outgunned 2014 Nines winners North Queensland 14-6 in the quarter-finals.

Storm’s outstanding tournament was ended 17-8 by Parramatta in the semi-finals – the second straight year that Melbourne was eliminated by the eventual champions.

Kennar, with his fourth, and Tohu Harris were on the scoresheet in the three tries to two defeat.

Ahhh, would appreciate the author updating the article with an asterisk and statement how the Eels were later stripped of the title for systematic salary cap rorts. You know, just so we are consistent with all reporting ;)

Maybe they're not going to risk giving him much game time?

Even in the nines Sandor didn't look up to speed with the pace of the game. Wish I could understand the fascination with him. Tui was awful as well so not a great showing from the "captains".

We can at least be fun bad at the nines and we weren't even that.

Same Same. Dropped ball, stupid penalties, running the sets up middle tackle after tackle and doing nothing. Started this year the same as last years end.

I wasn't impressed either - that being said it was a weird side they picked.

Munster looked pretty though - his agility is still there, looks energetic and fast.

I didn't mind Johns either. I think he might need to put on a few kilograms though.

Everyone else was fairly average or poor. Didn't like how a number of the backs played.

No one should take this quasi "shits and giggles" competition seriously.

It has no bearing on anything related to the NRL season proper imo.

Exactly what I was thinking. Not much to write home about for most of the squad, but I liked the looks of Johns and some of his lines. He needs to make it but first grade would be an interesting test. Fingers crossed.
