A very dodgy free kick for a 1-0 loss, not a bad result at all.
The question is will the Socceroos defence hold up in Sydney, I have confidence they will find the net at least once.

I'm not sure what the reasoning behind giving Kewell a whole game he still looks a lot less than 100% fit, and before today had not even managed a total of 90mins football since last year. On the otherhand he gives Viduka, our most dangerous player out there, a rest in the latter stages?

Guus must have something up his sleeve I just hope he can pull it off ... especially as I'll be there on Wednesday night :)

got to say though, from what I saw, Viduka was looking a little dangerous - against us a few times. A couple of very ordinary kicks got us into a bit of trouble. I thought Kewell was the man who looked most likely to set something up for us. A bit stiff to have a dodgy free kick cost us a result, but we didn't capitalise on our chances. Sydney it is. I think we'll have to score 3 though as I think Uruguay will score as well. Recoba is the danger man with that left foot of his.

Be great to win 2-0 though and end it all
Storming our way to glory!

I never said the free kick was what cost us but it was what allowed the Uruguayans to score their only points and it certianly wasn't a clear cut foul by Chipperfield.

With regards to Kewell I'm well aware what he is capable of but it was highly suprising to see Hudink play him for the full game when he had such little game time leading up to this important game, he clearly was not at 100%.

I'd of reveresed the Kewell, Viduka thing. I thought Viduka looked dangerous and Kewell was ordinary.
Glory, Glory to South Sydney!

Well done Australia. The down side - I think this will be the first time that League will seriously be quaking in their boots! Crowd averages are similar. Profile is NATIONAL - and now Australia are in the World Cup - first time in 32 years. This could propel Soccer into 2nd on the Australian Sports list! :(

Buzz they said that last time Australia made it to the world cup.. remember.

Still i think theres a place for Soccer in Australia, right next to RL and AFL... we can handle the three sports.. i think Union should be worried though, the way they're playing atm.. is horible.

Great game though, kinda wish i had gone to Fed square.. i really didn't think we could do it!

Awesome effort Australia SEE YA IN GERMANY IN 2006!!!

If the Socceroos win the World Cup the Wallabies will be under pressure to win their one.

That was 32 years ago! I hadn't even made it to the world then!

Considering the focus on soccer at the moment, any kind of performance at the world cup will be another reason for kids to play soccer instead of the REAL sports that have contact. When was the last broken nose you saw at a soccer game?

Oh please Buzz, next you'll be saying basketball isn't a REAL sport :P

Soccer (or the REAL football) is the biggest sport in the world and the soccer World Cup is the biggest world sporting event only rivalled by the Olympic Games. The win last night will definately strengthen soccers future in this country after many many years in the dolldrums, other sports should be looking over their shoulders. The attention last nights win is getting today is just phenomenol and it was just a qualifying game (be it a very crucial game). Look out if Australia does any good in the World Cup...

Having been involved in soccer in a previous lifetime, you're not wrong that more kids will be looking to play soccer after this. Even back in 1997 when we missed out (yes i was there at the MCG) junior participation was on the increase. The question for soccers governing body is to convert those juniors into seniors. At the moment many reach a certain age and move over to play other codes (AFL, basketball, league...) so Football Australia have got a lot of work ahead of them to reverse that trend.

Go Aussies!!

The only reason soccer (I will always call it soccer) is so popular around the world is that they haven't seen or played a great game like AFL or NRL. :D
