Incident at a casino involving his partner, or some such allegedly.

Don't know much more than that.

Jack de Belin pleads not guilty in rape case; bail conditions changed due to ‘high profile’
Joe McDonough
FOX SPORTS

St George Illawarra star Jack de Belin has entered a not guilty plea in Wollongong Local Court over the alleged rape of a 19-year-old woman on December 9.

The incumbent NSW Origin lock also asked the court to alter his bail conditions, with his lawyer saying his rugby league commitments make it difficult for him to report three times a week.

According to Illawarra Mercury court reporter Shannon Tonkin, police were resisting the change of conditions, but the magistrate granted the application saying de Belin was “too high profile” to be considered a flight risk.

His co-accused, friend Callan Sinclair (21), also pleaded not guilty through his lawyer Graeme Morrison — he was supported by his parents.

It is alleged that de Belin, Sinclair and a 19-year-old woman had attended a Christmas pub crawl in Wollongong and left in a taxi, with the woman believing they were on their way to another night spot.

Instead, the trio arrived at a private residence.

According to the woman’s statement to police, the men claimed they needed to get changed, and she needed to use the bathroom, so she followed them inside the apartment.

When she came back out of the room, about 1.30am, she alleges both men were naked and they sexually assaulted her.

After the alleged assault, the woman says she told a friend and went to hospital for treatment.

De Belin voluntarily fronted Wollongong Police Station about 3.40pm on December 13, and was charged with one count of aggravated sexual assault in company.

The matter has been adjourned until April 17.

Police will allege footy star urged mate to ‘have a go’ as Jack de Belin pleads not guilty to sexual assault
AAP
February 13, 2019

Shocking details have emerged of gang rape allegations against NSW State of Origin player Jack de Belin, who pleaded not guilty to assaulting a woman in company with his friend.

The 27-year-old was charged with aggravated sexual assault after the alleged attack on a 19-year-old woman in a Wollongong unit in the early hours of December 9.

Police allege he had sexual intercourse with the woman without her consent, in circumstances of aggravation, and in the company of his friend Callan Sinclair.

At one point, police will allege De Belin said to Sinclair, “come on, have a go”, as the alleged victim lay on the bed, crying, Nine News reported.

De Belin entered his not guilty plea at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday before the matter was adjourned to April 17.

The St George Illawarra Dragons lock successfully had his bail varied so he doesn’t need to report to police every Monday and Friday.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell added an additional condition that De Belin does not enter any international point of departure aside from travelling on an airport train line.

De Belin has also surrendered his passport.

Police prosecutor Sean Thackray had opposed the bail variation due to the “nature and seriousness of the offence” and the custodial sentence it carries. Mr Clisdell said there appeared to be “a reasonably strong case” against de Belin.

But the magistrate agreed to delete his reporting conditions because the 27-year-old was “a high-profile sportsperson” with professional rugby league obligations and was therefore unlikely to flee.

De Belin’s barrister, David Robert Campbell SC, told the court de Belin had a heavily pregnant wife and owned property in the area.

“The proceedings have to take their course in the usual way and there’s really nothing more he can say,” Mr Campbell told reporters outside court.

“Obviously, it was an essential (bail) variation because he wouldn’t be able to continue playing football with the team, pursuant to his contract, if we didn’t get it.”

Sinclair, 21, has indicated he will be pleading not guilty to the same charge. Neither man commented as they left court on Tuesday.

The sexual assault offence carries a maximum penalty of 20 years behind bars.

The Dragons on Tuesday noted de Belin was now able “to fulfil his training and playing commitments”.

“The club will make no further comment as this matter remains before the courts,” the club said in a statement.

‘Rome burns’: Storm boss shreds ‘morally tone deaf’ NRL over Jack de Belin rape case
Fox Sports
Feb 15th 2019

The NRL’s handling of the Jack de Belin case has been “morally tone deaf”, according to Melbourne Storm’s owner and chairman.

Bart Campbell sent a searing memo to the league’s 15 other bosses, The Daily Telegraph reports, after the NRL cleared de Belin to continue playing while legal proceedings against him ensue.

De Belin has been counted with aggravated sexual assault in company for an alleged incident involving a young woman at a Wollongong apartment last year.

“The game’s capacity to hurt itself is wonderful,” he said.

“We appear to be morally tone deaf as an organisation. We’re repeatedly making life tough for ourselves.

“I’m saying this as someone from a club that has had its own issues but it’s time for the governing body to act and act quickly.

“Standing around while Rome burns is not good enough. As a game we need to do something.”

Campbell’s email comes before NRL club chairs meet on February 28 prior to the opening of the season.

Campbell further admitted that if de Belin was playing for the Storm, he’d have been stood down while the case plays out.

“Would they be able to go to work still? It’s not for me to tell other clubs what to do but I know what the governing body should do,” he said.

“They’ve got to get on the front foot and drive change.”

I can't remember a more serious case against an active NRL player. Can anyone else?

Hayne's issue is not far behind, which unfortunately says a lot about the culture in the game today.

The Bulldogs Coffs Harbour inclident comes to mind but nobody was ever charged and police had issues with believing the alleged victim. In the Hayne case and particularly de Belin's, the police are confident in the charges and their evidence...

From $500k to $27 an hour: Ben Barba starts new life as truck driver after NRL exile
Fox Sports
Feb 15th 2019

en Barba has started reportedly a new job as a truck driver following his life ban from the NRL over an alleged physical altercation with his partner.

The Courier Mail reports Barba, who had yet to play a game for his new side North Queensland Cowboys when he was sacked, will get behind the wheel in his hometown of Mackay from Monday with a view to one day working in the mines.

It is a stunning fall from grace from Barba who was once named the best player in the game and commanded a salary of $500,000 a year. The average wage of a truck driver is $27.20 an hour.

Cowboys head of Football Peter Parr confirmed the club was attempting to help Barba as he picked up the pieces of his life.
“We are going to help Ben wherever possible,” he told the Courier Mail.

“At the end of the day, Ben is a human being with a partner and four young kids and we can’t just toss them out without any care.

“They are a young family and we feel we have a responsibility to help them — if indeed they want that help.”

The NRL deregistered Barba following an incident involving his partner Ainslee Currie at a Townsville casino on Australia Day.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg confirmed there was CCTV of the incident and that there was a “physical altercation between the player and his partner”.

“His registration with the game is no longer and I can’t see a time, at any time in the future, that he’ll be welcomed back,” Greenberg said.

“What I am going to say is that in the jurisdiction that I uphold, there’s no place for him. It’s probably time for Ben to find a new vocation.”
