The Philippines National Rugby League (PNRL) team the PAL Tamaraws go into the 2nd Rugby League Asian Cup at the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy in San Narciso, Zambales, Philippines on October 21, with a very different side to the one that won the inaugural Asian Cup in Thailand in 2012.

The PAL Tamaraws are well served with their Elite Australian, National Rugby League (NRL) players Kevin Gordon of the Gold Coast Titans making a return to the national side and Japan *lima lima lima duck* Sanix Blues bound previous South Sydney Rabbitohs, Andrew Everingham making his debut.

Surprisingly coming out of retirement is Paul Sheedy, previously of the Melbourne Storms!

International experience is not short in the side with the return of 2012 Captain Luke Srama, Gregg Cross Medal winner Will Dreves. As well as Ashley Black, Fred Colina, Chris Everingham, Richard Goodwin, Dennis Gordon, Glenn Power and Ned Stephenson.

The Asian Cup will be preceded by the 2nd International 9s tournament in the Philippines on October 19, which this year brings both a touch football competition and a full contact component. Debuting the San Narciso Juniors Rugby League team and the Merchant Marine Cadets of PMMA our tournament host, who will be joined by Cardiff Crewing Filipinas Inc and the return of the 2012 participants the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP), Anscorswire Ship Management and Don Bosco Technical Institute Makati.

As well as the debut of the full contact International 9s tournament with both the MAAP Warriors RUFC cadets and their graduate brothers the MAAP Kings taking on Filipino-Australian teams Clark Crusaders and Cebu City Chiefs formed by Australian based PNRL board members.

It used to be that you could comfortably make it to every rugby league international played in a given year. Yet on one of the quietest weekends of the year, NSW Country beat South African Clubs Selection 50-0 in Silverton, Vanuatu beat Niue 22-20 in Port Vila and Greece downed Thailand 90-0 in Bangkok. The Port Vila game was a great spectacle, with players from both teams forming a circle for a prayer at fulltime and celebrating long into the night – with the referee! Self-starting countries like these need all the help they can get from the RLIF. But it's a double-edged sword – the Federation probably wouldn't let them use players who qualify through great grandparents (and there were plenty of them), or allow five reserves!
