I love me some stats. Clearly they never tell the full story but they do paint a reasonable picture as to how players are going. Some stats are crucial to individual positions - you want your halves creating Tries/Line Breaks and you want your starting Props eating metres.

Anyway, here is a sample. Like a true football nerd, I keep a spreadsheet of full data (only on Storm players). If anyone wants me to post anything in particular, let me know and I will see if I have it. I will list the three top players against each category and any others I feel are relevant/noteworthy.

This is fantastic. Thanks for putting in all the effort. A few telling stats - Three of our starting forward pack averaging <70m a game isn't good enough. Chambers defence isn't as good as it has been. We aren't creating enough 2nd phase play. Tohu should bring an offload into his game. And we're still overly reliant on the big 3 doing something.

Couple of things I'd like you to find if you could. Would you be able to post avg metres gained per run for our entire forward pack ? And this might be a little harder. Could you find out the average receive numbers for Hampton/Roberts and also last years Widdop/Finch numbers. Would love to see a comparison on how different we use them. Cheers if you can.

No probs. Average Metres Per Run is easy enough.

Dayne Weston - 10.67m (from 6 Total Runs)
Jordan McLean - 9.96m (from 27 Total Runs)
Jesse Bromwich - 9.26m (from 110 Total Runs)
Mitch Garbutt - 8.56m (from 25 Total Runs)
George Rose - 8.63m (from 24 Total Runs)
Tohu Harris - 8.37m (from 63 Total Runs)
Kenny Bromwich - 8.32m (from 47 Total Runs)
Kevin Proctor - 8.13m (from 46 Total Runs)
Ryan Hoffman - 7.68m (from 95 Total Runs)
Bryan Norrie - 7.57m (from 46 Total Runs)
Tim Glasby - 7.50m (from 4 Total Runs)
Cameron Smith - 7.14m (from 36 Total Runs)
Ryan Hinchcliffe - 6.54m (from 46 Total Runs)

As most would be well aware of just from watching the games, Hinchcliffe and Norrie offer little in the way of runs/metres. Dayne Weston needs a few more minutes and to put his hand up for a run when out there. Jessie and Jordan are beasts.

Average Receives for Hampton and Roberts is easy enough as well but I only have access to 2014 data unfortunately, so cannot compare any stats to last year.

Average Number of Receives Per Game
Cooper Cronk - 49.17
Ben Roberts - 24.67
Ben Hampton - 23.80

Cronk gets the ball twice as often. What that stat doesn't show though is kicks in play.

Average Number of Kicks Per Game
Cooper Cronk - 12.00
Cameron Smith - 3.17
Ben Hampton - 3.00
Ben Roberts - 2.67

Hampton kicked 9 times in Round 1 with no Cronk (from memory his kicking wasn't that great in that game). After Round 1, Hampton kicked 6 times in 4 games.

Roberts kicked 5 times in Round 1 with no Cronk. After Round 1, Roberts kicked 3 times in 2 games.

Average Number of Kick Metres Per Game
Cooper Cronk - 364.00m
Cameron Smith - 115.33m
Ben Hampton - 82.20m
Ben Roberts - 57.33m

Also another stat expanded to include our entire forward pack (as it has been a discussion point);

Average Metres Per Game
Jesse Bromwich - 145.57m (from 110 Total Runs)
Ryan Hoffman - 104.29m (from 95 Total Runs)
Tohu Harris - 75.29m (from 63 Total Runs)
Mitch Garbutt - 71.33m (from 25 Total Runs)
Jordan McLean - 67.25m (from 27 Total Runs)
Bryan Norrie - 66.00m (from 61 Total Runs)
Kenny Bromwich - 55.86m (from 47 Total Runs)
Kevin Proctor - 53.43m (from 46 Total Runs)
George Rose - 51.75m (from 24 Total Runs)
Ryan Hinchcliffe - 43.00m (from 46 Total Runs)
Cameron Smith - 42.83m (from 36 Total Runs)
Dayne Weston - 32.00m (from 6 Total Runs)
Tim Glasby - 15.00m (from 4 Total Runs)

Awesome work my man.

Based on those stats then JB and JM should be our starting PF with Weston, Garbutt and Rose of the bench and perhaps KB of the bench with TH in to the starting line up and both Norrie and Hinchcliffe out.

Nice work mate, cheers for that. Hoffman gets a lot of ball for not much impact these days.

Very true. I was skeptical of Hoffman coming back to the Storm after the form he finished with before heading over to Wigan. He made me eat my words in 2012 when he came back and played what I think was the season of his career. He was outstanding. Since then, he has drifted back into the Hoffman of old. He hits the line and just does not bend it at all.

He still has a high work rate as he is our only forward (other than Smith) to play 80mins. Whether or not he would be more effective from playing less minutes I am not so sure. Unfortunately the Hoffman (and Hinchcliffe) runs can be momentum killers in sets.

Average Minutes Per Game
Cameron Smith - 80.83
Ryan Hoffman - 79.86
Jesse Bromwich - 55.14
Kevin Proctor - 55.00
Ryan Hinchcliffe - 54.00
Tohu Harris - 48.71
Bryan Norrie - 39.57
Kenny Bromwich - 35.57
Jordan McLean - 34.75
Mitch Garbutt - 27.67
George Rose - 22.25
Dayne Weston - 20.50
Tim Glasby - 15.50

Hinchcliffe is Bellamy's favourite so won't go anywhere but he needs to be benched and Tohu into the starting side. McLean needs more minutes when he is back (at the expense of Norrie).

I expect us to slide further down in 2014. The big ANZAC Day game inflates the current average.

those numbers are sad, especially considering there are teams with worse attendance

The crowds sure aren't "great" considering how successful the teams been for the last decade. You'd have to wonder how much different the numbers would be if the NRL bothered to help support the Storm in marketing and scheduling etc. Storm haven't had much help IMO.

Of the professional sporting teams in Australian competitions for 2013, the top 9 teams with the highest average attendance are all AFL teams. The 10th placed team is a Super Rugby Team.

NRL Clubs with Highest Average Attendances compared to other sporting teams in the AFL, A-League and Super Rugby;

11th - Brisbane Broncos - Avg 30,480
16th - South Sydney Rabbitohs - Avg 22,261
21st - Canterbury Bulldogs - 19,590
22nd - Sydney Roosters - 19,368
23rd - Newcastle Knights - 18,821
25th - Melbourne Storm - 16,302
30th - Nth Queensland Cowboys - 14,112
31st - Gold Coast Titans - 14,029

39th Wests Tigers - 11,452
42nd - Penrith Panthers - 10,337
43rd - Canberra Raiders - 10,226

There are only 47 teams in total across the codes listed... The NRL only has two teams inside the top 20... Unfortunately we all love an amatuer, unprofessional, backyard code.

Storm 777 you make the mistake that most people do when you look at some raw data all picture is not there.

All the players are fitted with GPS packs and the coaching staff can tell who is spent and who is still got petrol in the tank. Also is BN and RH in because they do exactly what Belly wants hit the meat of the line settle and try and get a quick play the ball you cant have the hole team breaking the line. Question you should also ask is who take the first hit up of the set and the second and how many meter that first and second runner gets as one is running into a set defence the other may not be. Not as simple as raw data....

Typically for set restarts, J Bromwich or Norrie take the first hitup (when on the field). Jessie does that hard stuff coming out of our own end. He runs into the middle of the defensive pack just like Norrie. He just does it more often and with much more effectiveness.

Hoffman does not run into the middle of the pack that often. He plays on an edge with much more space to move. He should find his front regularly for a quick play the balls but is unfortunately often pushed back and turtled. I'm also pretty sure Bellamy doesn't want an edge backrower missing 8 tackles a game like Hoffy did last week.
