Messy management dispute threatens Josh Addo-Carr’s move from Storm

The Foxx wants out of the Storm. A messy management dispute could derail his exit plan

In a move that could jeopardise his Melbourne exit, Josh Addo-Carr has reportedly hired a lawyer to help his split from his management team.

According to The Sunday Telegraph, Addo-Carr, who is set to leave the Storm at the end of 2020, is reportedly unhappy with his contract after learning a fellow State of Origin winger is on $550,000.

Addo-Carr, whose current deal is said to be worth $330,000 in 2020 and $350,000 in 2021, is yet to field any offers from rival clubs after the Storm announced they would conditionally release him at the end of the season on compassionate grounds.

The Sunday Telegraph reports two individuals not connected with Addo-Carr’s management company Pacific Sports Management have contacted rivals on the NSW star’s behalf which is confusing the situation further.

Addo-Carr’s manager Chris Orr said he couldn’t see why Addo-Carr wanted out, saying “we have done a terrific job for him since taking him from the Tigers to the Storm and having his contract upgraded”.

Orr said he’d take legal action against anyone claiming to represent Addo-Carr.

Late last year the Storm confirmed they’d allow Addo-Carr to return to Sydney to be closer to family, but the club’s position hinged on them being able to secure a player of equal value in return.

If Addo-Carr is unable to find a club due to his messy management situation, he could be forced to remain at the Storm for the final year of his contract.

As most have said all along, wanting more money is not compassionate grounds ::)

Like with Latrell, a short-sighted money hungry approach can have serious risks to JAC's long term financial position. He's not happy that someone else is getting more money than him, so he blames his agent and then wants out of the deal he thinks isn't fair. Not a good look for JAC at all IMO.

For a team in legitimate cap strife I can't believe we've got JAC on such a valuable deal. No wonder he wants out.

Proberly more likely a young guy but totally wouldn’t be surprised someone like a gagai would come down south
Would love that but I don't think we would have the cap space?

Fox Sports is reporting the club still has six empty roster spots for this year - 23 filled out of 29.

Does anyone know who the Storm are potentially bringing in? Wouldn’t mind another halfback and a few backs.

That gap may grow before it shrinks... I'm hearing of some deal where one of our contacted players will be loaned out elsewhere for 12 months :?

It sounds like our problem filling the remaining spots is to do with fitting everyone under the cap - I know it's already been said, but if this is indeed true, the club has well & truly stuffed up big time!

It's beyond belief if true....and it only strengthens the argument for long term club veterans like Smith and Bromwich to have their salary heavily discounted.

You mean by the club? Or the NRL? The NRL has a Veteran and Developed Player allowance as below (limit up to $200K total per club, not per player).
NRL Salary Cap wrote:

]$0.2 million – Veteran and Developed Player Allowance for eligible players who were either developed by the Club prior to becoming NRL players and / or have been a Top 30 player for at least 8 years at the Club or have been a Top 30 player for at least 10 years across the game
It doesn't mean much though. Most clubs will have at least one player that meets that criteria, so essentially just an extra $200K in the salary cap.

Suppose I meant what you said yourhero....one club players....found and developed by the Club.

But 200k per annum is pitiful....there should be a significantly meaningful salary cap reduction imho.

Half the players salary could be excluded....but most Sydney clubs that just try to buy a Premiership would scream blue murder.

Because Storm shouldn't have a salary cap problem really with the multitude of players that have been let go...clearly there's still an unusually high proportion of the salary cap tied up with a couple of club stalwarts.

It's tragic for the game if our Club or any Club might just have to let their long term club legends go to manage a ridiculously tight salary cap .....

I love Cam...always have and always will love the bloke for what he's done for our Club and game in Melbourne and nationally....but it still seems like we've had to let a lot of decent blokes go to make sure Cam goes out in the manner he deserves as a true champion

So hard to complain about whose fault it actually is because we're just speculating on who we think are "overpaid". And when you see how important Smith is to the teams success it's hard to put blame on him coming back again.

Either way it's the clubs fault for letting it get to this situation. Can't continually let players under contract leave and only bring in fringe players from other rosters and expect fans to be happy.

Meh I don't know what all your fuss is about. It's normal for clubs in salary cap scenarios to go through stages of rebuilding. We've had it good for so long and now we're just experiencing the downturn that's to be expected in a salary cap economy. Can't really see how the club has 'mismanaged' a salary when there were so many unknowns in the first place:
- Brodie Croft had all indications of being a future rep player but just didn't work out
- Cam Smith was probably expected to retire by last year but is still on a deserving high salary
- JAC was secured on a value contract that he's no longer happy with so wants out

Show me another club in any salary capped sporting code that has managed a consistently high-achieving roster for longer than we have.
