The Sharks NSW Cup side have begun their 2012 season in fine style with a 24-14 victory over the Illawarra Cutters at WIN Stadium in Wollongong

The Sharks went to the half time break ahead by 12-8 before falling behind to a Cutters try in the opening exchanges of the second half, however they responded well to come away deserved winners.

The victory, against the Cutters, who are the NSW Cup feeder team for St George Illawarra, came despite Sharks NRL coach Shane Flanagan holding back a number of his back up players after naming a six-man bench ahead of tomorrow’s NRL clash against the Wests Tigers.

The match began with the Cutters crossing for first points however the Sharks were quick to bounce back, two tries, both converted by Chad Townsend and the Cronulla side led 12-4 approaching half time, before a late four pointer from their opponents brought the scores closer together.

The Cutters, like they did in the first half, again started well and a try near the uprights, which was converted, put them in front with about 30 minutes of the match remaining.

Showing a great deal of resolve the Sharks kept pressing and were rewarded for their efforts, two tries, one of those coming from new recruit Sio Feki who went over twice on the afternoon, giving them what proved to be a match winning lead.

The Sharks held firm for the final 12 or so minutes and a solid one round victory was theirs.

For the Sharks, who are again fielding a joint venture side with the Melbourne Storm in the NSW Cup, front rowers Josh Cordoba and Jamien Lowe from Melbourne were both outstanding in the forwards, with Feki and young Sharks Toyota Cup player Crete Waaka strong in the backs.

well i was told Kenny Mitch and Luke Kelly all had good games but i wasnt given any details only luke set up at least 2 trys

Mitch was solid, being a big bloke he probably struggled in the heat a little bit. Kenny's workrate was great, no flashy plays. Shea made a few good jinking runs, didn't see that much ball though.

Kelly was the standout though, set up Leon Panapa's first try, bombed to the corner for a try, threw the last pass when Shane Neumann crashed over and provided a chip kick in the second half which was finished off by Panapa. Kicked a 40/20 in the first set of the match too, ref ruled he was outside the 40 when he was obviously inside.
