MELBOURNE Storm centre Steven Bell knew he was an outsider, but it didn't stop the pangs of disappointment when he was left out of the Queensland State-of-Origin squad this week.
While Storm teammates Dallas Johnson, Billy Slater and Cameron Smith celebrated their inclusion in the preliminary 22-man squad, Bell, 28, was left to ponder whether his chance would ever come.
"I was a bit disappointed because I feel like I have been playing OK," Bell said last night.
"But it is not the end of the world. It just adds that little more incentive to play well and prove them wrong this weekend.
"It was always going to be tough when both the (Australian) Test centres play for Queensland."
With five tries from seven games, Bell is one of the form centres of the competition. But Queensland selectors decided to stick by Test centres Willie Tonga and Shaun Berrigan, with Paul Bowman and Brent Tate providing cover.
Bell, who is off contract at Melbourne at the end of the year, would be hot property if he entered the open player market after June 30.
Storm is hopeful of securing the talented ball-runner to a new contract early next week.
"We are still in negotiation," Bell said. "Unfortunately it is dragging on a fair bit longer than I'd hoped, but there isn't much I can do.
"I'm trying not to let it worry me and I'm just concentrating on playing as well as I can."
Bell will tomorrow night mark stocky Sharks centre Paul Mellor, back with Cronulla after a two-year stint in Britain.
"He is a big guy and he carries the ball strongly," Bell said. "He marked up against (Brisbane's) Brent Tate last week and did a very good job, so I'll have a big job ahead of me."

We better lock them both to at least 3 year contracts.

"Better to have Won then Lost, than to have never won at all" Arrogant, but true hahahaha

It's kinda funny tho - I remember on the old forum not too long ago, people used to say that Bell should be sent back to Norths, and his fan base seemed fairly divided... to see how much he has improved and cemented his starting spot in such a short time is quite amazing.
Well done Belly Boy!
(I, of course, have always been a fan! )

I agree Surandy... he really has improved due to that. We look dangerous down that flank now, rather than just out to him
Storming our way to glory!
