Stats That Matter - Round 24

1,028

After having just 683 run metres in the first half, Melbourne almost doubled that in the second. Starved of possession with just 37 per cent in the opening stanza, the Storm attack went to work after the restart. Their efficiency was up after half-time with just three incomplete sets which was ultimately the deciding factor in wearing the Titans down.

302

You would think it would be impossible for Billy Slater to set a personal best at 35 years of age but that is precisely what the champion did on Saturday night. In his final game in Queensland, Slater ran for more metres than he has in any of his previous 315 NRL games. It was 162 metres more than any other Storm teammate and he even added in two line breaks and nine tackle busts for good measure. What a fitting way for the greatest fullback of all time to sign off in his home state.

53

The concern leading into this game was around the fitness of Cameron Smith after the Storm skipper picked up a back injury the previous week. However 53 tackles later and those concerns have likely been put to bed. Smith recorded his equal second most tackles this season as well as getting the ball in his hands on 122 occasions, also the second highest for the year.

Three successive Minor Premierships now sit entirely in Melbourne's control. Both the Rabbitohs and Roosters suffered defeats yesterday which means Craig Bellamy's men need only a win to ensure the J.J Giltinan Shield can stay right where it belongs. Even if Melbourne lose next Friday night, its superior points differential over the Roosters (+32) and Rabbitohs (+75) would mean there would have to be some big scores put up to knock the men in purple off their perch.

After watching the game again... 2018 really is the year of Storm not capitalising on opportunities. Once again we had a number of missed try opportunities that could have made the result a lot more comfortable.

Scott's NFL pass to Olam for no reason.
If JAC looks inside, Slater likely goes in under the posts untouched.
Joe fumbling the ball whilst trying to get it down.

Munster's try was beautiful. Literally nothing happening, carrying a clear injury, runs passed seven Titans defenders and he still cuts them to shreds. Once he fields offers on the open market (as he should), just give him the keys to AAMI Park and be done with it.

Yea, that's why I'm sort of optimistic on things clicking in September. Obviously not every try scoring opportunity results in a try but I reckon we'd be on the low end of the scale when it comes to converting opportunities.

Slater was overall very good against the Titans.

The career-high ~300m running was great and it was off the back of 11 kick returns @155m. That early line break and set up for Olam (before he sh*t the bed) gave Slater a ton of confidence on returns so he took more and more as the night went on. When was the last time he took 11 kick returns or more?

3 line breaks
1 line break assist
9 tackle breaks

Wasn't a perfect game - He pushed an offload for an error and a couple of pushed passes for negative plays (notably a hospital pass to JAC at one point). He still tries his hand at kicking for some stupid reason.

Was really surprised by how many times he brought the ball back instead of passing it to one of the wingers.

Yeah Billy turned back the clock and if he keeps playing like that for the rest of the season we're in with a big chance

Only 3-5 games of top flight RL left in his career. Should definitely take the line on more. Throw his body into the line - well, the half gaps
