‘Had to get needled every game’: Smith’s secret injury revealed

Melbourne Storm’s champion skipper Cameron Smith secretly played the final two months of the season with a chronic shoulder injury that required painkilling injections.

The 37-year-old missed three games after suffering a grade two AC joint injury while scoring a try in Melbourne’s 27-12 win over Newcastle in Round 12 but was determined to return to the field.

Speaking toThe Sydney Morning Herald, Storm football manager Frank Ponissi revealed the severity of the injury, which was so bad Smith had to get injections to get through training sessions.

“He had to get needled every game to play out the season,” Ponissi said.

“He even had to get needled at times so he could train. The injury was more annoying than anything, but it never really had the chance to heal. He kept whacking it in games and it lingered throughout the rest of the season. He’s been carrying it for a while.”

Smith, as always, was instrumental in Sunday’s grand final win over the Panthers. He made 29 tackles, had one linebreak, one tackle bust and scored a try.

But the injury was so severe, he couldn’t swing a golf club in his spare time.

He told the Herald a month ago that a swing aggravated the pain.

Ironically, Smith suffered the injury when crossing for the try that equalled coach Craig Bellamy’s 46 career tries from when he played for the Raiders during the 80s and early 90s.

Smith has still given no indication of what his future looks like, however the Herald reports the superstar No.9 will meet with his manager, Isaac Moses to make a decision.

The club is giving their best ever player the time he needs and wants to make a call.

“Cameron in my opinion is the greatest player I’ve ever seen,’’ Storm CEO Dave Donaghy told the Herald.

“Nobody wanted to win more than him on Sunday night. The history books will show what impact he has had on rugby league, on and off the field.

“If the game had more Cameron Smiths, rugby league would be an even better product than what it is.”

Wow, they did well to keep that underwraps. You'd imagine this is something he will consider when making his retirement decision.

He had ice on his shoulder after the game and needed help to lift the trophy twice once from Kenny and once from Munster He was fine after they lifted it..

Article says "plus Ryley Jacks who had surgery in the off-season." It doesn't say anything else about Ryley.

They must have updated the article cause that wasn’t there yesterday

So, apparently Dale Finucane's torn his calf and will be out for six weeks.

No idea who starts a lock now. Maybe Nelson Asofa-Solomona? Bench is getting a tad skinny for my liking.

It's still OK

Tough break for Dale after missing a bit of time last season too. Have wondered to myself how he even fits into the team these days. Picking up another injury doesn't help.

Having him and Harry out is a massive hit for the first couple of weeks. Ideally we could've fast-tracked Smith's move to lock and been good to go. But we'll need to do some experimenting now.

Very sad for Dale. Hope he is ok. Tearing your calf is serious.

Melbourne Storm dealt another huge injury blow with Dale Finucane ruled out for six weeks


Melbourne Storm captain Dale Finucane has been ruled out for six weeks, adding another huge name to the club's casualty ward ahead of the 2021 season.

With star hooker Harry Grant missing in action for the first few rounds, the reigning premiers were already on the back foot injury wise.

And on Thursday morning, the club confirmed reports from Wednesday that Finucane - who was recently named co-captain alongisde Jesse Bromwich - would be out of action for over a month after picking up a lowe leg injury.

Dale Finucane tore his left calf at training yesterday, could be missing up to Rd7. Would be an 8 week recovery, at least a grade 2-3 injury (partial/complete tear) with presence of boot/extended recovery time. He required a 9 week recovery for a right calf injury late last year

Good news for Finucane is calf strains have a relatively low recurrence rate. But they are notorious for lingering symptoms & often require gradual rehab process. Finucane hoped to return in 6 weeks last season but suffered an aggravation at training during his rehab.
