On SEN tonight, around 6.30pm, the hosts pushed strongly the idea of a statue being erected to honour Cameron Smith. They spoke with almost reverence about him. The hosts are very AFL-centric. Their comments show how much impact Cameron has had in this town.

Likewise on AFL360 on Fox. The hosts of that show love him.

It should not be underestimated what an extraordinary contribution Cameron Smith has made to the Storm and to rugby league. A superb player, a class person, a wonderful role model.

can anyone shed any light on ISC jersey sizes...would love to order a Cam Smith 356 jersey but not sure of the size. I have an S Koogah Storm jersey from 3 years ago....should I say with ISC Small or go to xs as I heard ISC apparel is slightly larger ??

He should add another Dally M to that list in a few weeks time... Smithy has seemingly always featured quite prominently in Dally M voting so I had a quick look at how he has finished each year on the tally.

Brilliant in its consistency at an elite level. The same could be said on any of these kinds of awards - Clive Churchill (or any form of MOTM). It is an arbitrarily applied qualitative measure based on how the person making the decision feels in the heat of the moment... But what is the alternative? Rely purely on some form of stats formula? No thanks... I think you will equally agree that isn't the way to judge how well someone played.

At least it is getting better. With the award rule/process changes made this year it has at least a bit more credibility.

I don't see anything wrong with having a proper selection panel that consists of selected media member and/or refs/coaches voting at the end of the season much like they do in MLB/NFL/NBA. Actually finding the qualified people might be the hard part though.

And that can't be any worse than having "the Cowboys played well and Thurston set up that one try so I'll give him the 3 votes" process that currently goes on.

As I said, I really think they have moved in the right direction this year with the changes made. Particularly getting rid of media personalities and handing voting rights to ex-players exclusively. Still subject to bias and interpretation, sure. But less so than if morons like Rothfield are getting a say.

2017 Voting Process

Voting for the Dally M Medal utilises a 3, 2, 1 point allocation after each Premiership match, with 3 points awarded to the player the judge believed to have been the best on field, 2 points for the second best and 1 point for the third best. Points for each match and the Dally M leader board are publicly available during the first 14 rounds of the competition. After this, voting goes behind closed doors, with anticipation building to the announcement of the winner during Grand Final Week.

The Team of the Year recognises the best player in each position across the 26 rounds. The 2017 event will see the addition of the interchange position to the Team of the Year, acknowledging the importance of impact players in the modern game and their ability to change the momentum of a match and influence the outcome. Consistent with the Dally M Medal, Team of the Year voting occurs after each regular season premiership match. Players who receive Dally M Medal points will automatically receive respective 3, 2, 1 Team of the Year points in their position. Players selected for the remaining positions will receive 1 Team of the Year point in their position.

All votes are submitted by judges at the conclusion of each Premiership match. Prior to the submission of votes, judges are provided with the match summary and key individual statistics to help inform their vote. Accounting firm Ernst & Young collects and manages votes, reporting the results to the NRL at the conclusion of the 26 Premiership rounds.

Players who are suspended throughout the season are deducted three Dally M points for each week of suspension. Any player who is suspended for two separate offences in any one season becomes ineligible for the Dally M Medal and Team of the Year.


Judging Panel

The Awards and Recognition Committee invites a respected panel of retired players to adjudicate on the Dally M awards each year. Judges must be retired from elite rugby league for a minimum of two years.
