East Tigers/Cronulla Sharks 2011
Story on Sharks website re: yesterday's NSW Cup match v Windsor
I have bolded any comments re: Storm players and the score. My takeaways: Rory Kostjasyn played his first game back from injury, Maurice Blair played well at five eighth and Sisa Waqa had "a hand" in the first try.http://www.sharks.com.au/default.aspx?s ... ep-results
The Hisense Cronulla Sharks NSW Cup side kick started the three-game roster with an impressive 30-16 win over Windsor Wolves at Toyota Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The game signaled the return of Fijian representative player Jayson Bukuya who has been sidelined with a number of injuries over the past two seasons. Up early packing his bag on Saturday morning, Bukuya was over the moon about being back on the paddock for the Sharks and will aim for NRL selection in the coming weeks.
Props Andrew Clayton and Siosaia Vave both had very strong games up the middle and played plenty of minutes.
The Sharks began the scoring after just five minutes when a neat cross field bomb was tapped back by winger Sisa Waqa inside to Trent Grubb who simply had to catch the ball and plant it down over the line. Tim Smith converted to have the home side up 6-0 early.
The black, white and blue went over twice within the next ten minutes with tries to Rory Kostjasyn and Maurice Blair. Smith converted one of the tries and the score was at 16-0 after 15 minutes.
A penalty in front of goal saw the Sharks take the quick two points and extend their lead out to 18-0.
Blair looked dangerous at five-eighth threatening the line on a number occasions and it wasn't long before he busted through the Wolves defence to run down the left flank and draw the defender to give a short pass to centre Ricky Leutele to cross for his first four pointer of the afternoon. Smith converted from out wide to give the Sharks a 24-0 lead going into the sheds at halftime.
The Wolves came back from the break looking life a different outfit and after just 15 minutes had put 16 points on the Sharks.
Two tries came from sloppy defence up the middle just 10m out from the line, while the other came from a neat little grubber kick through on the right flank to be pounced on by a flying winger. Two out of the three conversion were made.
The next 5 minute saw some messy football, with both sides dropping the ball tit for tat on a number of occasions.
Some desperate defence from Bukuya saw the the Sharks mood changed and it wasnt long before the home side perched themselves in the opposition 20 metres for a crack at four points.
The Sharks didn't disappoint when Leutele crossed for a double with 10 minutes remaining. Smith converted and the score was extended 30-16, and in the end it was enough to come away with a 14 point victory.
Great to finally get a win after so many close finishes.
We had four Storm guys take the field for us, Johnson, Niko, Chisholm and Luke Kelly was drafted in late to play five-eighth. Word from the coaching staff was that he had a "nice and tidy" game after hardly spending any time with the side.
Johnson didn't play that many minutes - he is a strong carrier of the ball though. Niko was a bit up and down, was driven back a fair bit in tackles, needs to concentrate on getting his centre of gravity lower.
Chisholm was the pick though. Scored the match winner off a chip from Kelly, he also got the first try breaking the line off a short ball and then stepping the fullback. Played a leading hand in Fred Pakutoa's try as well. He's settling into the team nicely, having Kelly at five-eighth helped things.
Anywho, match reports and highlights are on our website.

Here are my thoughts re: Cronulla v Newtown game:
Sisa Waqa: Bula you will be happy that I was very impressed with Sisa's game he made a number of good runs from dummy half and from defensive twenty, he scored two tries and had a hand in another. One of his tries was a typical winger's try with three players trying to push him into touch and for him to score in the corner. He also flew through the air and tapped a bomb back right onto Tu'u Maori's chest for Tu'u to score a try. (Sisa also scored two tries yesterday v Wenthworthville).
Tu'u Maori: He played pretty well as well although not quite as good as Sisa. He made a number of good runs and scored the try described above.
Rory Kostjasyn: He controlled the game at dummy half for the 50 minutes he played there for and spent other 30 minutes making some good yards in the back row.
Rob Rochow: Did his job, nothing flashy in attack but was involved in a lot of defence.
Jake Hawkins: Came on from bench and played hooker for 30 minutes, he was quite good in attack and made a cuple of awesome tackles around the hips/legs.
I noticed M. Blair did not play v Newtown and was going to ask if he was injured but noticed he played yesterday, refer to post below.

A dominant performance by the Sharks NSW Cup side saw them come away with a convincing 34-6 victory over Wentworthville on Saturday afternoon.
The match, played in soggy conditions at Toyota Stadium, started slowly with both sides unable to capitalise on good field position.
It took more than 20 minutes, but utility Maurice Blair didn’t disappoint when he darted through the line from close out to cross for the for the first four-pointer of the match. Winger Nathan Stapleton converted to give the home side a 6-0 lead.
The Shark second try came from a Trent Grubb line break up the right flank. The back rower, who look dangerous all game, attracted a number of defenders only to pull-off a Gidley-flick to Stapleton on the wing who ran more than 60m to score under the posts. He converted his own try to give the Sharks a 12-point lead.
Five minutes later the Magpies hit back with a short side play exposing the Sharks who were out numbered in defence. The try was converted and the Sharks went into the break 12-6 in front.
The 50th minute saw a brilliant Siosaia Vave offload create some second phase play to allow fullback Isaac Gordon to put a steaming Sisa Waqa through a gaping hole to cross the line. The conversion was unsuccessful and the score remained 16-6.
Waqa was in again eight minutes later when he defused a cross-field bomb by leaping over the Magpies defenders to come down and scoot 70m to place the ball under the black dot. Stapleton converted taking the score out to 22-6.
Stapleton then flew down the left flank only to poll axe the opposing winger, run another 20m and throw an inside pass to Kose Lelei who crossed for his first of the day. Stapleton converted and the score was at 28-6.
With less than 10 minutes remaining Gordon showed how dangerous he can be with some fancy footwork turning some of his opponents inside out and scoring the last try of the game. Stapleton converted and the score settled at 34-6.
