Melbourne Storm to face Leeds Rhinos in World Club Challenge at AAMI Park

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/nrl/t ... f580be5f9b

THE World Club Challenge is coming to Melbourne for the first time.

Melbourne Storm will fight for the title of the world’s best rugby league team when it hosts Leeds Rhinos at AAMI Park next year.

The NRL premier and the English Super League champion will clash at AAMI Park on Friday February 16.

The deal was done with the help of the Victroria Government, with the announcement expected today.

“The World Club Challenge is right at home in the sporting capital. We can’t wait to get behind our Storm and help make them the world’s best rugby league team,” said John Eren, Victorian minister for tourism and major events.

“It’s yet another coup for the sports capital that will bring more visitors to Victoria — boosting businesses and supporting local jobs.”

Storm and Leeds previously met in the 2013 World Cup Challenge in the UK, in which Storm prevailed.

Despite hosting the game, Storm will be up against it given its list of departed players following its grand final win.

Cooper Cronk, Tohu Harris, Jordan McLean and Slade Griffin have all joined new clubs.

Although, returning club favourite Ryan Hoffman and recruit Sam Kasiano should be available.

It will kick off a bumper 2018 for rugby league in Victoria, which will include Storm’s NRL title defence and a blockbuster State of Origin fixture at the MCG on June 6.

Meanwhile, Australia is expected to trot out their best 17 in its Rugby League World Cup quarter-final against Samoa in Darwin on Friday night.

The only positions up for grabs in Mal Meninga’s side are five-eighth and the bench utility spot.

Storm playmaker Cameron Munster made a compelling case to beat Michael Morgan and James Maloney for the No.6 jersey with a two-try effort against Lebanon on Friday.

Meninga is expected to go for a four-forward bench rotation — with temperatures expected to top 33C in Darwin on Friday — with Wade Graham tipped to get the nod for the utility position.

“The conditions will definitely play a part in the final 17,” skipper Cameron Smith said.

In making today's announcement at AAMI Park, Minister for Sport, Tourism and Major Events, John Eren said the match would provide a great opportunity for interstate and international visitors to experience some of what Melbourne has to offer in one weekend.

"The World Club Challenge is right at home in the sporting capital. We can't wait to get behind our Storm and help make them the world's best rugby league team.

"It's yet another coup for the sports capital that will bring more visitors to Victoria – boosting businesses and supporting local jobs."

Melbourne Storm CEO Dave Donaghy said the Club was thrilled to be hosting the World Club Challenge on home soil.

"There's no better venue or city to host a game that decides the world's best rugby league team than AAMI Park and Melbourne – Australia's sporting capital.

"It will be fantastic to see rugby league take centre stage again at AAMI Park, having hosted record Storm crowds and the Rugby League World Cup in 2017.

"I know our Storm members and fans as well as the sports enthusiast will come out to support their Premiership winning team and to see some of the world's best players take the field.

"Our football department is looking forward to the challenge of being back playing for the World Club Challenge trophy and testing themselves again the current Super League Premiers."

It was also announced this morning the match will be broadcast live on Nine in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Nine's Director of Sport, Tom Malone, said; "We're really excited about this match – the two best rugby league teams in the world squaring up against each other for the title of champions. Wide World of Sports will be the best place to catch all the action – live and free and in HD."

Tickets are on-sale to Storm and Leeds members today at ticketek.com.au with public on-sale to follow at 10am Tuesday 21 November.

Enough with this "sporting capital" nonsense.

On the positive this can be part of my early birthday party!

Other than Danny McGuire and Tom Briscoe who both scored two tries in his final game for Leeds Rhinos as they beat Castleford Tigers 24-6 to win a record eighth Super League Grand Final, who do we need to look out for in the Leeds team?

Leeds went from relegation danger to premiership glory so it was a roller coaster ride.

Any of you who are knowledgeable about Leeds and the Super League; now Harris, Cronk and Mclean are gone and our top players will only have been back in training for a few weeks; how do you think we will go?

Interestingly Melbourne Storm have put all their twitter information about the World Club Challenge under the hashtag of - http://msr.lc/2hvAiq1 #WCC #purplepride

#WCC just happens to be the hashtag of the World Council of Churches.

So those churchgoers who access that hashtag are in for some strange quirky religion known as Rugby League.

The Kiwis are NOT happy!

Warriors preseason plans damaged by World Club Challenge

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/league/98 ... -challenge

he Warriors' preseason game against the Storm in Rotorua is in danger of becoming a farce.

The Storm confirmed on Tuesday that they'll play against Leeds in the World Club Challenge, which will take place in Melbourne on February 16.

But the Storm had already committed to playing the Warriors at Rotorua International Stadium on February 17.

Given there's no chance of anyone playing in both games and the prestigious status of the World Club Challenge, the Storm are likely to field a team of second string players and kids against the Warriors.

Tickets for the game in Rotorua range from $20 to $70 for adults, but those who've already purchased their tickets, must be wondering if they've wasted their money.

The Warriors have billed the game as a chance to see Ryan Hoffman take on his old club, now he's back with the Storm, but he and the other Storm stars will be nowhere near Rotorua on February 17.

The World Club Challenge is usually played in England at the beginning of each season, but the Storm refused to make the trip next year, leaving Leeds with no other option but to head down under.

The Storm have confirmed they will field their strongest possible team against Leeds and will be going all out to win the trophy.

While that's all well and good for the Storm, it causes a significant problem for the Warriors, who would have been hoping the game against the reigning premiers would have helped get them ready for their round one game against the Rabbitohs in Perth.

There is no Nines tournament next year, with the preseason reduced to give the players suitable rest after the World Cup.

No other preseason games for the Warriors have been announced yet, but it is believed they will travel to the Sunshine Coast to play the Titans.

After poor starts to the last few seasons, the Warriors have made it a focus of theirs to begin 2018 with a better run of results.

The Warriors appear to have been blind sided by the Storm's announcement, but their CEO Cameron George says they'll be giving it everything in the game, no matter who is lined in in the opposition's team.

"Stephen (Kearney, Warriors coach) will field whichever team he wants to and we'll take the trial seriously, regardless of who the opposition is," George said.

"Who knows, who they'll trot out? They might have some NRL stars in the trial game over here to play alongside some of their younger generation coming through."

I was lucky enough to be up north in the UK and shuffle my holiday around a bit to get to Leeds in 2013 to see the WCC there so this will be a nice bookend. Hopefully the same result

Cameron Smith and Billy Slater could be rested for the World Club Challenge.

“However we will work closely with Smithy and Billy on a pre-season plan and closer to the date we will assess their fitness with them to see if they are OK.

“If Cameron and Billy are OK to go by mid-February then they will play,’’ Storm football manager Frank Ponissi said.

“While we are very keen to win the WCC, we also need to keep the whole season in mind _ they are obviously very important to us.’’

No Australian club has more 2018 squad players at the World Cup than the Storm, who contributed nine players, as did Parramatta and St George Illawarra. The Warriors have 13 players at the World Cup.

Smith, Slater, Cameron Munster, Felise Kaufusi and Will Chambers are with the Australian team.

Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Kenny Bromwich are with New Zealand, Suliasi Vunivalu with Fiji and Young Tonumaipea with Samoa.

“Our football department is looking forward to the challenge of being back playing for the World Club Challenge trophy and testing themselves against Leeds,” Melbourne CEO David Donaghy said.

Melbourne’s acceptance of the WCC involvement prevents what would have been for Australian rugby league an embarrassing loss of an international fixture because of the Storm’s reluctance to travel to England.
