Storm v Manly: Through the years

Round 9, 2014 - Melbourne Storm 22 def Manly Sea Eagles 19
At a rain soaked AAMI Park these two teams played out a game that would culminate in one of the most unforgettable finishes. A Manly field goal on the stroke of half time resulted in an unusual 5-4 score line at the break. Billy Slater was seemingly keeping his side in the contest single handily with a double built on individual brilliance before the visitors suddenly ran in three unanswered tries for a nine-point lead with 10 minutes to play. Cooper Cronk bridged the gap by collecting his own grubber kick to score and then, in the 75th minute, put in a swinging cross field kick that hit debutant Kurt Mann on the chest as the 21-year-old scored the match winner to send every Storm fan who was there that night in jubilant celebration.

Round 1, 2014 - Melbourne Storm 23 def Manly Sea Eagles 22
With no Cooper Cronk in the side, Melbourne ventured to Brookvale Oval for the season opener against the Sea Eagles. After the first 40 minutes it appeared the Victorian side was in for a long night as they headed for the sheds facing a 20-4 deficit. However following the restart Storm put their foot down to score 18 unanswered points in just 26 minutes. They managed to take the game into golden point and in the 83rd minute it would be the skipper Cameron Smith who stepped up to nail the first field goal of his career and hand Melbourne a memorable two points.

Preliminary final, 2012 - Melbourne Storm 40 def Manly Sea Eagles 12
There was a collective feeling of unease around AAMI Park when Storm lead by just six points at half-time of this Preliminary final. In the end, Storm fans had very little to worry about as Will Chambers helped lift the mood when he orchestrated an 80 metre Cooper Cronk try in the 43rd minute. Manly managed one try in the second half but it was otherwise a purple procession as the home side piled on five tries to one to book their place in the decider the following week.

Round 25, 2011 - Melbourne Storm 4 def by Manly Sea Eagles 18
The game infamously dubbed 'The Battle of Brookvale'. In front of a packed crowd of more than 20,000 at Brookvale Oval, these two teams went toe-to-toe in more ways than one. In the 24th minute tempers boiled over when a scuffle broke out between the two teams. That 'scuffle' then became a piece of history when Adam Blair and Glenn Stewart decided to keep pleasantries rolling as they went at it on the sideline after being sin binned.

Seeing Slater’s media interviews and some social media stuff, he looks ultra proud to get the chance to captain the club this week. Hope he has a blinder as a result and doesn’t overplay his hand by trying too hard.

Best of luck champion!

One thing I really hope we worked on this week is the timing on our left edge. The number of forward passes in recent weeks has been atrocious. Hoffy is overrunning the plays constantly and needs to work on his combination with Munster.

Slater has been as much of a culprit as anyone. When he has chimed in on the left edge, I have held my breath a little bit as he has thrown a number of average passes this year. Don't get me wrong, he has pulled off some beauties as well but sometimes I think he pushes the long pass rather than hit a flat runner or take the line on himself.

this season.

Which Billy will show up on Saturday night?

With no Smith and the halfback position still being eh it feels like a game he'll over force his hand. Hopefully the good outweighs the bad.

that is why we have to score the first try to settle the new captain down.

else Billy will be trying to play full back, half back, 5/8th, centre, wing, forward and hooker

as well as trying to organise the half time oranges

I take it that with Hughes dropping out that means Kaufusi will come onto the bench or Grant
