Slater could be out for the season
Spot on. The reality is that we just can't keep every player when other clubs come knocking with big offers. It's a very tough balancing act but i'd much rather them leave than to pay overs and leave us with less money to spend elsewhere. You can't keep them all and we're no different to every other club who lose young talent to other teams.yourhero wrote:If that $450K asking price Sal mentioned is even close to the mark, we absolutely did the right thing with Mann.
We cannot hold on to every kid who shows a little talent if we have to pay overs in order to do it. We will become uncompetitive fast if we do that.
It's obviously a week to week condition; at some point it will tip from "manageable" to "unmanageable". I think the article just takes a punt that the NSW grubs will deliberately target it.
Given the fact that the refs have no balls these days and wouldn't dare send a new south wails player off in an Origin decider expect him to be targeted and hit late, high and often. I'm going to have 20 bucks each way on Beau Scott with a late shoulder charge from behind, and/or a chicken wing from Gallen.

We must all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately
He is confirmed as out for the rest of 2015.

Spectacularly disappointing.
And made even worse by the fact that it makes Gallen the Grub's assertion that he was only hanging on for a big Origin payday before surgery look likely.

Gallen should look at his own team, everyone forgets Farrah has a shoulder injury. He did not play between origin one and two, just like Billy. Now it is being stated Farrah might not play until origin three. But no body is talking about this, I just hope Gallen's injury is really bad and he can play origin three.

There is a huge misunderstanding amongst people as to what has happened with Bill here. The injury is not related to origin - as yourhero said, it was when Manu smashed him - legally!!
The problem is that when this story came out in the origin lead up, it's unfortunately made him look like he was putting Qld ahead of Storm, but reality is it probably has made no difference to what our season looks like if he didn't play origin and just had the surgery beforehand.

If he had surgery in April when he did the shoulder (it was Easter Monday),he might have been able to play by mid/end of August. Wayne Carey did the same them to his shoulder years ago early in the season and was back playing in 16 weeks. I believe there was a little bit of wanting to play for Queensland in his thinking on how to manage the injury.
I can't help but wonder if Billy is starting to consider how much longer he realistically can play. Between the surgeries and the constant management of other injuries I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of his career is judged on a year by year basis.
Hopefully during this downtime he works closely with Cameron Munster to teach him everything he knows. That's our future right there.

Again - retiring from Origin would have had no bearing on this injury!!

It's at the point where the club really needs to sit back and think about moving on from him. Why pay a premium amount of money for a player when his replacement is already here and signed until the end of 2017 ? We all know how important Slater is when healthy, but how much can that be relied on now ? It doesn't do the club any good nor Munster if he's playing first grade every other week.
