Or more likely a 'list filler' as in we need a name to make up the squad numbers. He wouldn't be getting much and it would be more of a development offer to see if he would be worth investing in long term. We don't need another FG quality back with Cheese, Hughes and Olam on the list so they could have signed Fozzie Bear for all I care as he wouldn't be getting game time anyway.

The whole of "Sport" is dominated by media now.

the sport is secondary to the media coverage of the theatre and the story.

Look at how ESPN covers sport. Like it or not; that is the way sport is going. Media pay big bucks and they want some sort of story. some sort of angle. some sort of intimacy.

You only have to look at the current Ashes series; when there is a draw in Melbourne on a very boring and flat pitch; the media go looking for other stories. Ball tampering; Joe Root v David Warner; Bairstow headbutting; James Anderson gets a beer tipped over him. England cricket team on the piss; the balmy army etc etc etc.

But this latest non-story sustained what appears to be a pretty conscious campaign of sledging against the touring team that extends beyond the pitch and into the newspapers and broadcasts. Had the boot been on the other foot, talk would have been of "whingeing Poms" (surely a pejorative expression used to describe a nationality; you wonder if it will be in circulation in 20 years) and a "doctored" pitch. Recall the reactions to England winning the Ashes in 2013 and 2015? Was it more 'well played, England' or 'doctored Pom pitches define the series'?

The problem is - the English cricket team had no "feel good" stories till Alistair Cook scored his 244 not out. So the Australian media made up negative stories to help sell the idea that England were rubbish and out of their depth.

The media is like a huge; all consuming Packman; eating everything in sight. you can't fight it;
so you have to work with it and give them feel good stories that they buy into. Especially the Melbourne Storm; who despite their tremendous success; have to deal with trying to get coverage in an AFL dominated town and also get coverage in "Steak and Kidney" which is the home of Foxtel and all the media outlets when we aren't a Sydney team.

The Sydney media don't care about the Melbourne Storm. We are a painful boil on their backside. We were never meant to be this good. They begrudgingly give us a little bit of respect with a grunt and then go on to talk about State of Origin for the next 4 hours. That is all anyone in the Sydney media cares about. Even that summer series on Fox one, in the height of the World Cup spent most of its time talking about State of Origin?!?!

I heard an interview on SEN with Dale Finucane with former Collingwood captain Tony Shaw and some other nupty and it was like they didn't know who Dale was. All the talked about was how good Cameron Smith was and blah, blah blah. Not about Dale's person story. Scoring in the Grand Final and having lost 3 Grand Finals what was it like to finally win one. There was NO intimacy at all with one of our best players in a one team town. The No 1 sports radio channel in Melbourne didn't even really know who Dale was. Do you get it?

The Sandor Earl story is a way of us being able to somewhat controll the media. Sandor Earl creates his own intimacy.

You have to give them something.

Sandor Earl; for what ever you think of him' can talk his head off about his journey and his life and everything. Man this guy can talk. He gushes intimacy.

He is made for the media.

Sandor Earl will spend the year as sort of the guide on the "Melbourne Storm experience" ride that will surface as the background for our year. Brett Finch also does a tremendous job doing this last year and you could see how he was fantastic at bringing a certain level of intimacy and closeness with the interviews with our Storm players. The players respond to him and he cares about us. Whereas the normal hired Sydney blokes give it the "bugger off; you blokes won; can we please go back to the studio as quickly as possible" routine.

In today's modern media; you must have intimacy.

So we give them this great story to follow; Sandor's journey.

Meanwhile Josh Addo-Carr and Suliasi Vunivalu will continue to score tries and will win games and everyone will be happy.

Ok, especially for Lucas. In summary...

The media is like a huge; all consuming Packman; eating everything in sight. you can't fight it; give them the intimate; tear jerking and heart wrenching Sandon Earl story so the rest of the team can get on with their job of being boring ol Melbourne Storm and just keep winning.

The team is basically set now. The key is how the forward pack works with the inclusion of Sam and Ryan leaving. Who also put their hand up to replace Tahu? Could be one of 4 different payers.

Rumour mill - South Sydney Storm set their sights on Felise Kaufusi as a replacement for Angus Crichton.

Kaufusi re-signed in April for the 2018 season, with an option for 2019 - I cannot find a source explicit on who has the option in their favour (Kaufusi or the club), but I believe it is in Kaufusi's favour.

Would be very surprised if Felise moved to the Rabbitohs, especially since his brother just moved down. The only way I see him leaving is if Souths throw ridiculous money at him which they weren’t prepared to give to Crichton

All over the Sydney papers.

Felise has quickly become one of my fav players.

His brother coming down will help as that is a family that is very close together.

With Cronk gone; we should have a bit of coin to throw around to look after our up and coming superstar players.

Felise is a border-line superstar.

Melbourne Storm in contract talks to extend Cameron Smith beyond 2018

Gilbert Gardiner, Herald Sun

MELBOURNE Storm will start informal contract talks with champion Cameron Smith next week.

The reigning Dally M medallist will return to the club on Monday, after an extended break due to the World Cup, to prepare for a 17th — and possibly final — NRL season.

The legendary hooker’s return kickstarts a busy period for Storm on and off the field, with contract talks, the World Club Challenge and trial games on the agenda.

Storm wants to retain Smith and premiership mastermind Craig Bellamy beyond next season, as well as blunt any potential poaching raids of three premiership linchpins.

With Curtis Scott is close to finalising a long-term deal, the Herald Sun understands Tim Glasby (2018) and Felise Kaufusi (option 2019) could also be locked away before the start of the season.

Storm booked a closed trial game against Newcastle Knights on February 7, before the World Club Challenge clash against Super League champions Leeds Rhinos on February 16 at AAMI Park.

Storm football director Frank Ponissi said Smith, Slater and Chambers had all signalled their intent to face the Rhinos, despite the short turnaround.

“The plan is to play them, absolutely, but we’ll make that decision closer to the game,” Ponissi said.

“We’re certainly taking it very seriously, that’s why we organised the Newcastle trial … we didn’t want to go into the World Club Challenge without a game given Leeds would have already started their season.”

The secret trial against the Knights was booked only after Leeds confirmed it would be travelling to Australia.

“Our players won’t play the full (trial) game, just to give them an opportunity to have some hit-outs to get their timing in both in attack and defence,” Ponissi said.

Ponissi revealed Chambers took it upon himself, during a three-week family holiday in Queensland, to train with Storm feeder club, Sunshine Coast Falcons.

“They’re the ultimate professionals, Bill and Will,” Ponissi said.

“They’ve come back in absolute A1 condition, so in a couple of weeks we’d be surprised if they were not playing in the World Club Challenge.

“It’s gone to another level, the last few days, the quality of training.”

That’s another really good example of the brilliant work ethic of some of our senior guys... putting in the hard yards even during the very tiny off-season they had this year.

Our Club is just beyond words. The players, the coaching staff, the owners, the admin.

I cannot express how proud I am to be a tiny tiny part of this monumental RL Club with my membership.

Win or lose in 2018....I owe this Club a lot for all of the happy times they have meant to me over many years...
Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time
