Sounds confident.

Good to see him embrace it as a challenge.

Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith targets back-to-back NRL premiership history
GILBERT GARDINER, Herald Sun

CAMERON Smith wants Melbourne Storm to be the first team in the NRL era to win back-to-back premierships.

A successful title defence remains the final frontier for Smith, 34, who owns records for games, points, goals and wins.

Smith has played in six grand finals — won four — across 16 decorated seasons.

But the captain believes it’s “achievable” for the current Storm squad to go back-to-back despite losing Cooper Cronk, who signed a two-year deal with premiership favourites Sydney Roosters this week, Jordan McLean, Tohu Harris and Slade Griffin from the grand final team.

“Looking quite far ahead, in the NRL arena, there is no team that’s gone back to back with premierships,” Smith told the Herald Sun.

“That’s on the radar. It is achievable. It’s extremely hard to do. I’ve been in that situation before.

“That would be pretty special to be part of a team that could win back-to-back premierships.”

Since Storm entered the competition, when the league went national in 1998, no club has defended the Provan-Summons trophy.

Storm romped the minor premiership and premiership double last season — losing just four games in a breathtakingly consistent campaign.

Josh Addo-Carr, Felise Kaufusi and Curtis Scott emerged as genuine game-breakers, while the “Big Three” — Smith, Billy Slater and Cronk — wound back the clock for one last dance.

The next wave of Storm youngsters threaten to be just as capable but Smith conceded “a lot of luck” goes into premiership runs.

“There’s a lot of hard work that goes into being there for the game but there’s a lot of luck as well,” Smith said.

“You seen some of the great sides and some of the greatest players ever to play the game finish a career not winning a premiership.

”It’s not all just being the best team or being the best players you’ll win one — it doesn’t work like that. You need things to fall your way at times.

“I love competing, I love winning, I can’t stand losing and while I’m still involved in the NRL, playing Origin and representing Australia, I just want to keep winning and winning them all.”

I think it is great for all our players to embrace it and talk it up.

will put fear in all our opponents hearts and heads that we are ready and waiting, ruthlessly.
