who is video ref for our game?

Klown was found out to be the most inept, inconsistent ref the nrl had on their books. It only goes to prove that Craig Bellamy was right.

Gotta love Finchy, he's tipped us to go all the way ;)

It is seen as football's impossible dream, but retired Melbourne Storm back Brett Finch believes the club will win the NRL premiership from outside the top four.

The sixth-placed Storm begins its finals campaign with an elimination final against Canterbury Bulldogs at AAMI Park on Sunday afternoon, and despite the Storm's inconsistent form and an ongoing ankle problem for captain Cameron Smith, Finch said the side could make history this season.

Finch has watched his old side closely after retiring from the NRL last year and signing with Channel Nine as a commentator for its NRL coverage this season.

"I'm a bit biased because they are my team, but if any team is ever going to do it from outside the top four, then the Storm is a massive chance this year," he said. "It's certainly doable ... the thing that makes it doable this year is that the competition is so close. The Storm have finished sixth and they are still just two wins off the minor premiers, so the competition has never been closer.

"In previous years, there has been such a difference between the top half and the bottom half that there hasn't been quality of team in the bottom half of the eight to challenge.

"If you look at the Storm, they have beaten South Sydney [third], they have beaten Manly [second] and were very unlucky against the Roosters [first] recently."

The NRL has only adopted the same top-eight system as the AFL in recent seasons and has seen few sides from below the top four make a run to the grand final.

The Storm has struggled against the Bulldogs in two earlier meetings this season, with the Bulldogs thrashing an undermanned Storm 40-12 in Perth in late March, then winning a defensive affair 6-4 in July. But since then, the Bulldogs' form has dipped as they fell from being top-four candidates to ending in seventh place.

Finch said he was confident the Storm would beat the Bulldogs on Sunday and head to Sydney for the semi-finals confident in its ability.

"I think the Storm are in better form than Canterbury," he said. "I don't think the Bulldogs are in as good form as they were in when they beat Melbourne, and I know the Storm are in better form now than back then.

"I just don't think the Bulldogs would be happy with the form they showed against Gold Coast in the final round. No doubt they will show up and put in a better performance, but I think Melbourne have timed their run really well and are playing really good footy."

Now he is back living in Sydney, Finch said he was still amazed at the Storm's ability to attract little coverage despite its premiership credentials.

"The Storm are just out of sight, out of mind," he said. "No matter how well they are going - even the years like 2009 when we won the competition and finished in the top four - in grand final week it was like Parramatta were the only team in the grand final.

"More so this year, that ability to go under the radar will help them [Storm], I think they are going to give it a hell of a shake."

While the Storm says Smith's ankle injury has him a 50-50 prospect of playing on Sunday, Finch said he rated his former captain at "100 per cent" to play.

"You can tell when some players are injured, they don't carry it well, but with Smithy you wouldn't have a clue," Finch said. "He doesn't get enough credit for being an extremely tough and resilient player, and you just look at that Origin period. I could see how much pain he was in with his ankle injury during State of Origin I, but he backed up for the Storm a few days after and made 50-plus tackles against North Queensland.

"There is no doubt he will be in pain; he won't be near 100 per cent but he will be playing."

The Storm handed the goalkicking duties to centre Will Chambers for the second half of Friday night's win over Brisbane Broncos and Finch said he saw no hassles if Chambers continued in the role against Canterbury to reduce the impact on Smith's ailing left ankle.

"Chambers has reckoned he was the best goalkicker in the club for the last four or five years," Finch joked. "Now the pressure is on Will. I texted him the other day, congratulating him for finally getting the goalkicking. We had a good laugh.

"If it took some pressure off Smithy, then that's great and Will kicked a nice one from the sideline.

"I'd still rather see Smithy out there and not goalkicking than not out there at all."

His special comments and sideline work for Channel Nine has drawn good reviews and Finch said he hoped to continue in the role beyond this season.

"I thought I would look to head into coaching and I only planned on doing it for a year or so, but I've really enjoyed it ... it's something I want to do for as long as I can," he said.

"I'm still around all the boys and now I get paid to do that without having to go to training and get bashed about. It's great."

The Storm will play the Bulldogs in the elimination final at AAMI Park on Sunday at 4.10pm, with tickets available from Ticketek.

I did see that Sallymay. I meant as an on field ref. He is meant to be one of the senior refs in the NRL yet he is not on field for the finals! Must be what stormy said.
