Perhaps not all the "working class" RahRah supporters know why League was started maybe it might give them food for thought it is the SNOBS GAME always was & always will be as far as i'm concerned, let;s not forget this game was "born" in a very high class private school in England the "working man" had no chance unless his parents were very professional people (you know what i mean).
I hate the game & history with a passion would never ever support a game with the history RahRah has got.

The birth of Rugby League
The continuing 'unpleasantness' betwixt the two makes the Super League war look like a short term skirmish ;D

I went off rugby after the World Cup in 2003 (no, not because the Wallabies lost) but because I was bored shitless of it.

Sorry, but as long as rugby is dominated by drop goals and penalties with their farcial advantage rule (just award the penalty already, sir!) it will still be fighting it out with football (soccer) for the third most popular football code in Australia. I remember John O'Neill smugly proclaiming that the 2003 WC would deliver a "war chest" that they would use to destroy rugby league and be the 2nd most popular sport in the country.

Fast forward a few years and you have Super 15 which isn't worthy of a FTA TV contract (compare to the mid to late 90s where Super 12 had a presence on Channel Ten), a national team which gets treated worse on TV in the non-rugby states than the Storm and their 3 biggest signings from the "war chest" years have all come back to rugby league. Berrick Barnes couldn't even play regular first grade for the Broncos but is a walk in to the Wallaby side. Plus, the last 2 WC finals have had a grand total of TWO tries scored. And who scored them? That's right; rugby league converts Lote Tuqiri and Jason Robinson. That tells me everything about the state of rugby.

Rugby is not competition any more. It's a pimple on the arse of rugby league yet the naysayers insist that the Storm were just a stop gap for rugby fans who watch rugby league because there was no rugby team to support. Typical of the class warrior, white collar, silver spoon, private school boy snobbery and culture that sticks to the alleged "Game they play in heaven" like dags on a sheep's arse. Peter FitzSimons, anyone?

In terms of the Rebels though; are you surprised they got flogged 43-blot? Look at their team FFS! It's Dad's Army! Look how many of them are in their 30s!

Crowds against Brumbies and Reds will be low 20s and the games against NZ sides will probably have about 60-40 percentage in favor of NZ fans. But at the end of the day they have a 4 month season where they have 6 or 7 home games compared to our 9 month season with 12 home games. So far they get more exposure than we could ever dream of but I wonder how the media love affair will go after they've lost a few games.

They might not be a threat to us.......no sport is a threat in AFL-bourne.

One thing they do better - they tell their fans at the start of the season the exact days their games are on.

Whether we like it or not, they are here to stay and they have huge support from the top end of town. Money won't be a problem and eventually the huge names will be brought down here to ensure they are a top 4 side.

I went, it was a terrible spectacle sitting behind the posts, much prefer it on TV or from a sideline view. The big money spenders will keep their crowds up. Simple as that.

As for us, bring on 12.15am broadcasts into the "sporting capital".

Thanks to everyone for giving their opinions. I don't follow union and never have so it was good to get a gauge on everyones opinion. I was actually surprised how many of you went to the game or planned on going. For me, those silly line outs and the way fullbacks catch the ball and then kick long over the sidelines is just so strange. A lot of waiting around it seems. As for my mate who switched alliegences, even he said it was not as good as rugby league. In a perfect world I would love for Storm, Rebels, Victory & Heart to have packed stadiums every week. Then we could truly be called sporting capital of the world. But with the xenophobic view of Melbournians towards other codes this will be at least 20 years away. GO STORM

In a perfect world there would only be one code of football.

After I posted this message I received a very short sharp email from the friend in question to let me know in no uncertain terms that she never has and never will have a rebels membership
But she does admit to all the others !!!

A crowd of 14,234 for their second game against one of the other Aussie teams. Decent crowd but unsurprisingly well down on their inaugural game. That figure last night will be much closer to their season average as opposed to last weeks.

different games so you have to watch with different perspectives.
grown up with rugby & like the game at regional & national levels. have grown to appreciate league immensely at U20s national & international levels whereas a couple of years ago would have not even bothered watching....couldn't understand why everyone kept running at each other instead of drawing & passing, stepping, or some other way to beat a man instead of ramming straight into them!
rugby converts to league bring a few different skills (as mentioned above) - usually. league converts to rugby I think aren't always that successful imo except when its a winger - and lets face it - in both games the wingers job is probably the most alike compared to other positions. think this is because if you grow up playing league those other skills aren't used as often or aren't as necessary. not saying league players don't or can't have those skills - just that that the ones who possess them naturally, great athletic ability, agility, speed, great coordination etc become standouts for me.
aside from all that rugby is ok at regional level because the players still chuck the ball about more, make riskier (read more exciting) play & the game depends on flair more. prefer Maori rugby over any other for that reason, heart in the mouth stuff beacause the first instinct is to run the ball no matter where you are on the paddock & kicking is way down in the list of options.
rugby is a game of possession & you can starve your opposition of it which often makes for a tactical, but boring game whereas in league you know each team has the opportunity to get their 6 - makes it non-stop & exciting. loving it!

I thought the crowd was a disappointed, i expected 20k and then for it to slowly drop to about about 12-14k by the end of the season. It's already at 14k just two games into it, i would be upset if i was in charge of super rugby with that.

I must say I was quite surprised by such a large drop in crowd numbers so quickly, I'd expected it would take a couple more games to get to this level.

Guess it just shows that the first week's crowd was greatly boosted by people going along to see what all the fuss was about and League supporters going along to get a fix whilst waiting for the real thing to start in two weeks time.

The flogging by the Warratahs wouldn't have helped bolster crowd numbers. Obviously it did help kickstart the players' hearts. Maybe after last night's win their crowds may improve?? But then they'll be contending with the start to the AFL and NRL season's.
