Concussed Inglis throws another scare through Maroons camp
CHRIS BARRETT
May 24, 2010

Queensland strike weapon Greg Inglis will be assessed by medical staff this morning after a nasty head clash with Willie Tonga sent an almighty scare through Maroons camp late yesterday.

The heavy contact between the centre partners occurred midway through Queensland's session at the Hyatt Regency resort at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast, with the cracking of heads heard from beyond the sideline of the training field.

Inglis lay prone on the ground for several minutes before walking gingerly from the field suffering mild concussion. He spent the remainder of the session holed up in the team's support van, with an ice pack applied to a wound on his forehead just above his left eye, while team doctor Roy Saunders also assessed possible damage to the star centre's jaw.

Saunders said Inglis would be monitored overnight but he did not believe he would require scans today to check for a potential fracture. "There was no loss of consciousness," he said. "They just banged heads and [Inglis] was shaken up for a bit."

Tonga was left unscathed by the collision and completed the session. "He got me just above the ear," Tonga said. "It stung me pretty good but I'm OK."

While the collision did not appear likely to threaten Inglis's involvement in the first match of the State of Origin series on Wednesday, the swelling on the knock will be checked today, before Queensland's final training run before flying to Sydney tomorrow.

In the event of Inglis being ruled out, 18th man Ben Te'o would be promoted to make his Origin debut.

The Inglis scare threw yet another spanner in the works for Mal Meninga's side, coming only a day after hooker and vice-captain Cameron Smith withdrew after an unsuccessful bid to recover from an elbow injury suffered while playing for Australia against New Zealand in Melbourne earlier this month.

Smith and the Queensland medical staff confirmed the inevitable on Saturday. His inability to recover in time for Origin I was little surprise to onlookers at the Maroons' camp who had watched him barely pass a ball all week, let alone test out the elbow under contact.

Matt Ballin, Smith's back-up, has trained at dummy half for all but a few plays during Queensland's daily sessions at Coolum. Maroons fullback Billy Slater said yesterday the Manly premiership winner was a capable replacement.

''It's disappointing that Smithy won't be there but obviously Matty has been training all week with us,'' Slater said. ''Matty is a great player. He's played in some big games and won a grand final. He certainly won't let anyone down for Queensland.''

The absence of Smith increases the importance of Cooper Cronk's position in the squad. The versatile Melbourne and Test halfback is set to be given time at dummy half when he comes off the bench on Wednesday.

''Cooper can play all positions. He's a very solid defender and he's quite a big halfback,'' Storm teammate Slater said. ''He can slot in at lock or back row or you could even put him out in the centres or at fullback. He's going to put his body in front of those big fellas and he's going to take the line on. That's what you expect at State of Origin level.''

Except for the fact the world's best hooker (possibly best player) Cam Smith is out.

On paper the NSW forward pack looks better than Qld's but Qld's backs have more of the X factor than NSW. Will NSW's forwards be able to provide their backs with enough field position to win the game or will Qld's backs be able to produce enough acts of brilliance to win the game? They are the two main questions in my belief.

Given that it's been persisting down all day on ANZ stadium the 'alleged' bigger, tougher forward park of NSW should be able to cruise to a win

I'd like to see that

I notice 9's coverage of SoO is bracketed between 7's LOST & 10's Master Chef
